Met. Monday - Redoing a Bench

Thanks again to the wonderful Susan @ Between Naps On The Porch for hosting this wonderful event. I always look so forward to seeing what everyone has been up to. Be sure to visit her blog to see what she and all the others have been doing.

I have been so excited that we will soon have cooler weather and really in the mood to get the patio and back yard all fixed up, and then you have a bump in the road. Well a crack in the cement actually. All of a sudden a crack and water bubbling up from the patio area near a sprinkler. DH took the sledge hammer and chipped away the concrete to find a broken pipe. Ok, so on to the repairs and then chip out the rest of the section and repour concrete. We really hadn't planned on this, but oh well, could have been worse. Only problem is it was 105 the day he was chipping out the concrete. Not a good thing.

When all of this work was done, this is the way the patio table looked. I think he was too tired to clean up anything else. Bless his heart, I don't blame him.

With that little chore taken care of. I was ready to get all the patio furniture cleaned up and redone. This is a bench that my parents made for me. It is a copy of an Antique Bonnet Bench that I had seen and was soooooo expensive. They copied it to the letter and surprised me with it in 1976. Precious gift. A good washing, sanding and then a new coat of Spar Varnish and it will be good as new again.

This is a view of the patio table and chairs all scrubbed and the cushions all washed and ready to use. I love Sunbrella fabric. You can take the hose and wash all the dust off and it dries and looks brand new.

This is the cute little Rooster planter I found at GW this week for $3. All I had right now was a few Dollar Tree flowers, but a trip to the nursery and a pretty Geranium will look gorgeous in it. The rooster is sitting on 4 wicker placemats that I taped together with sheetrock patching tape that has held up for about 6 yrs. It can also be hosed off, so much easier than a tablecloth.

Here is my wonderful little bench all varnished and ready to be enjoyed. I have some of the same fabric cushions on it that I have on the yard bench. It kind of ties the two area together.

I really enjoy the bench on this wall of the patio. It gives us another place to sit and the grandchildren always like to sit on it.

The patio is all scrumbed and cleaned, just a few more pots with plants and some wall decorations and we will be all set for the cooler weather. I can hardly wait.

Thanks so much for stopping by. I always appreciate your visits and hope you will come again soon.

  5. Marty,
Everything looks so beautiful. As usual you have not let one detail go unattended. I love the bench your parents made for you. I'm sure everytime you look at it you think of them. I know everytime I look at something that belonged to my Grandparents or that my Father might have given me or maybe repaired for me, I just have to smile.

It's truly amazing what eating super healthy food does for us.

  39. The bench looks so lovely Marty! What a precious heirloom, and it fits in so nicely on your inviting patio. Your little seating area in the previous post is just gorgeous. I know what you mean about the heat. It was 93 here this weekend and Hub was laying a level footing for a little fountain that we bought for our anniversary, and I could see just how much the heat was affecting him. They are calling for a cool front next week, and I am so happy. Finally some normal weather. Thanks so much for your uplifting comments. They mean a lot to me Marty.

  49. Hello Marty~ how wonderful to still have sunshine. We just had our last weekend of sun. Our temps have dropped from 90 to 60 at a blink.
I would imagine you spend many splendid afternoons and evenings in your inviting patio.
I adore the Bonnet bench your folks crafted and the straw bonnets that adorn the top too. Isn't it nice what a little TLC can do to a jewel in the rough.

Come on over...I'd enjoy your company.

    Sweet wishes,

When you made mention of the temps and desert like plants...I can relate! You are a neighbor and believe it or not we sometimes get Arizona type weather here too! A few days back it was 105! Kinda makes it hard to work out in the yard!! Anyway...loved your post! Hugs!

  60. Hi Marty!
I have a really big favor to ask of you. Cindy of Applestone Cottage is coming for a visit to the valley. She will be here the week of the 26th, and Friday October 30th we would like to meet at Gooseberries. (Where we went before with the AZ. bloggers, off of West Thunderbird Road.) Would you be available, and if so could you do me a favor? I need to have you post to AZ bloggers - the ones that we have, and I think we should invite any in AZ. that want to come. Just post a post Attention AZ. Bloggers. We ofcourse will need a count, and then we need to check with Gooseberries and make sure it would be available. I would say maybe 12. Cindy and her husband, and she has a friend here named Linda, I will be there - that is 4. I think we have to pre-order the food like we did before. So they will need to check the menu at the website - so we can give them the order in advance. I also thought it would be nice to have each lady bring a Fall or Halloween homemade item that they could share. I thought it would be fun to put a number on each item that we bring, put the numbers in a basket and let everyone draw a number. That way each person could take a little something away with them. What do you think? Cindy thought the idea was lovely, and we all have so many talents to bring to the table. I won't be back until Friday, October 23rd, so I was worried about there not being enough time to send out a notice. I hate to ask Marty but could you do this for me? I so wanted us to get together before Halloween and such a nice opportunity to meet with a Wisconsin blogger. I am leaving at 3 am in the morning. Thank you and please let me know. We may need to find you some more help, maybe Charolette in Scottsdale? Thanks so very much, Love, Sherry
