Met Monday-All That Tablescape Stuff

Thank your so much to our gracious hostess Susan @ Between Naps On The Porch for hosting this fun party. Be sure to visit her and see what she's been up to and a list of all the other participants.

When your house is small and yet you want to have pretty Tablescapes, storage is a HUGE problem. I have two tables. The one in the Dining Room is a Trestle Library table and so the same size tablecloth fits, but then there's all those tablerunners too.

Well, this may not look like much to you, but clearing off one shelf in the small hall linen closet and having all the linens that fit this table in one spot is a real blessing to me. Now I can finally see what I have.

This table in the Breakfast/Family Room area is 54" round and has 4 leaves that allow it to extend out to seat 10 comfortably. This calls for a lot of different size table linens depending on how many you are having. I have a wonderful buffet that I really enjoy and it does have super storage. Now since I want to be amongst all the action, this also serves as my computer station.

Finally I have all the linens for this table in one spot. I placed all the really large ones on the bottom since I don't use them as often and tried to color code as best as possible.

Placemats all together on the top shelf, and most of the dark colors on this side.

Lighter colors and lace mostly on this side.

Napkins can change the look of a table in an instant, so that is another storage problem. I finally figured out that by standing them on end, I can see all the different colors and patterns and can easily count how many I have of each pattern. Some candle storage is great too.

More napkin storage and napkin rings.

This probably looks like a huge mess to you, but believe me, this is organized. I try to buy only salad plates or bowls as much as possible to change up my tablescapes, but there are also some dinner plates in the mix. Well, finally all of the pieces are put together and I really can see and find them. Now it's easy to see what will mix and match and what I want to use with just my white set that's in another cupboard.

This isn't very exciting to anyone but me, but boy am I glad to have this mess straightened out. Thanks so much for stopping by.

Also, don't forget we are having our "Spring Cloche Party" on April 2nd. Be sure to grab the button and place on your sidebar to spread the word. This is where we will show all our Spring, St. Patrick's Day and Easter. I can't wait to see all your gorgeous creations.

  2. Marty! Standing the napkins on end is BRILLIANT! I'm going to do that immediately! I am a collector of linens so that ends up being a huge issue for me. I am dying for a round table, but my husband is giving me the evil eye- it may take some persuading. LOL Great post!

  5. I know what you mean about having things all in one place. I'm currently working on my own "space" for these things. I'm lucky, I have lots of unused space in my house now that the kids are out of here. I just didn't want to buy any new furniture to house my things...so, I'm improvising. Hope to have pictures up soon.

I can't believe how many napkins you have...I see my future!

  6. Hey there Ms. Marty! If I lived closer, I would try to wrestle that beautiful round table away from you. Enjoy your Sunday ....

I'm glad to see that there's not just me with plates, dishes and linen galore! I love the idea with the napkins...I have to store most of my table linen in the guest bedroom.

  11. Marty~~

I have been meaning to organize my dishes and linens for quite some time and you have truly inspired me (even though I have less than half of what you have, I know this is going to be a big undertaking!). Standing the napkins on their sides is so clever and I am going to do that. I think it might add more room to the drawer as well.

I know you must feel good that you have this job done. Getting organized always makes me feel better.

  12. What a grand idea...standing the napkins on end! Your newly organized dishes look great, now you can just sit back with the doors to the cabinet open and plan table settings. :)

  13. I think that is a great idea to stand the napkins on their end. Simple but a smart solution.

  14. WoW Marty! That looks organized to me... will you come over and do that to mine? Hehehehe... I have a HUGE hutch and don't have it organized that well. I also think that putting your napkins sideways is a fantastic idea! I usually iron them and put them away but they get so wrinkled cause I have to shoved them in a drawer that is too full I end up ironing them again! Great idea!

  17. I LOVED this post! I am so tortured with finding storage for all my dishes and table linens. I have a small house too. So it's wonderful to see what other people do. Standing your napkins on end is brilliant! Buying mostly salad plates and keeping the dinner plate neutral is also a great idea!

Do you have some other storage tips you can share?

  19. Marty...I enjoyed this post so much. Anything that helps me organize. I don't have enough to really get into tablescaping..but I am enjoying it so much, one day I might and this helps. Mostly, the way to store napkins. I do have a drawer of them that we use on a daily basis..but the others are here and there all over the place. In plastic zip bags in the linen closet, in dresser drawers...everywhere. NOW I know how to store the..and for that I thank you SO much! What a great tip!

  26. I've just made room in my 'spare room' on some shelving for extra plates and glasses, I don't know why I didn't think of it sooner ;) now I can go out and buy more seasonal sets. Love how you've organized all your linens.

  27. Wow, Marty! You are so organized! Thanks for giving us a peek into your dish storage! I LOVE those frenchy provencal plates in the middle! Trying to catch up...wonderful tea for one! We all need to pamper ourselves occasionally! Hope you had a wonderful weekend...hugs...Debbie

  28. I definetly need to reorganize...Everytime I organize my dishes amd related items, I buy more and then I'm back in the same quandry of having things 'stuffed' in places that should not be stuffed. I love the napkin idea, that is smart thinking. All looks great.

  29. Organized linens and dishes excite me too. I've been meaning to do the same thing for some time. Thanks for the motivation.

  31. HI Marty! I love your post. I can totally relate. I have cleared off shelves and gotten rid of things just so I can put my tablecloths somewhere! How funny...to have such a problem! But I know what you mean...all those tablerunners, placemats, tablecloths....oh my! I just organized my linen closet this weekend too. What a relief. Hubby said he wanted to buy a round dining table...I said "Are you out of your mind?" What would I do with all those tablecloths? Hahahaha....he didn't say anything after that! Big smile.
    Have a great week Marty!
    Blessings,

  32. Very inspiring! I have some table cloths hanging on hangers in a closet, which I guess was designed to be a linen closet, but it also is where I store the vaccum, and for some reason I just don't care for the table linens to be in there too. Your idea is much better. All your beautiful stuff, deserves a nice place. Thanks for welcoming me into the world of commenting on blog posts, and participating in partys! I still don't know what I'm doing a lot of times, but you always come through with a sweet comment. It means a lot. Thanks! Gail

  33. I can identify completely with the thrill of organization. I just did one cabinet and it was a big "whew". You are so clever to put the napkins on their side, I would never have thought to do that -- warning, I'm going to steal your idea!

  34. We are doing this, too. It looks great and isn't it so nice to be able to find things quickly!

  37. I always wondered how you gals with so many pretties manage to store them all. I too love the napkins up on end - I will have to share it with my mom. Thanks for sharing your tips.

  38. I had organized my table linens a while back and you know what?? My thinkgs need to be straightened again!! I love your idea of stacking the napkins on their side--great idea (I don't know if it will work in the drawers I have since they are very very very shallow--I will have to see.

    ReplyDelete
  39. It looks wonderful, Marty! I keep most of my placemats, tablecloths, and napkins in laundry totes, stored in my "silver closet" (you can see through holes in the sides, but it's not nearly as elegant and convenient as the methods you're using).

Thank you for the inspiration. Perhaps I'll follow your lead and get really organized ... but probably NOT! ;)

Someone sent me a cartoon the other day. I woman was sitting in her bathrobe with her coffee mug, saying "I find it helps to organize chores into categories: Things I won't do now; Things I won't do later; Things I'll Never Do ..." I could definitely relate!!!

    Have a great week!

  42. Marty, I love your storage system! I, too, have a smaller house and have been wanting to organize my linens and napkin rings in a buffet/hutch for so long and am now in the process of looking at furniture. I also love the idea of standing the napkins on their side, how ingenious!!
    Thanks for sharing.

I just saw when your next cloche party is. I will be away in Savannah, but I am going to try to pre-set the publish button and have one ready. I tried that last time but it did not work.

So wonderful to vist you today!

  48. Marty I thought I would drop in to see what you have been up to & I see that straightening out your linens is the answer. OH I WISH YOU LIVED CLOSER! Mine are a mess. I have so many & they are just stuffed in my hutch. It's hard to find what you want & they are so wrinkled when I pull them out. Hope you inspire me to do the smae. But, it's not happening yet. Take care. Charlene

  51. Oh my. I had to call my husband to see these pictures. He thinks I am the only one with a collection dinnerware and linens. I find that it takes about four good clean-ups a year to keep it looking show-and tell shape. Good luck and enjoy being able to find what you are looking for, within a reasonable amount of time...michelle
