Where I Put It All - The Good,Bad & Ugly

Everyone is always asking me where I keep it all in a small home.  As you have all seen I still havn't learned the art of restraint or minimalism.  I have every surface filled with something, so really most all of my things are in constant use or display somewhere.  I just switch out the vignettes and accessories from one room to another.  However, it is necessary for a little storage.  So here is the unvarnished truth.

I managed to sneak two shelves for me out of a metal shelving unit in the garage.  My hope is to eventually move all the DH's things and have the whole shelf.  Wouldn't that be neat!!! This shelf holds those lanterns and candlesticks and some larger things that aren't currently in use.

This one holds planters, figurines and odds and ends.

The box and basket hold a bunch of smaller figurines.

I just cover the shelves since they are in the garage with some old tee shirts to keep as much dust as possible off everything.  Not very pretty, but it works.

Now for all those dishes I use for tablescapes.  Well, this holds them all.  As you can see, it is full and there isn't room for anymore.  I mostly buy salad plates so I can mix and match with other plates and of course the famous Big Lots white set of dishes.

This is where I have all of my chargers.  I use tissue paper inbetween them to keep them from getting scratched.

One of the drawers in the Entertainment Center holds some napkins and all those many napkin rings.

The larger center drawer of the Entertainment Center holds the most napkins.

The buffet holds some tableclothes on one side.

And a lot of placemats and more tableclothes on the other side.  I also have one shelf in the linen closet where I keep the larger tableclothes and table runners.

I have a small cabinet in the laundry room that works really hard to hold a lot of my "stuff". The top is full of olds irons and other display things, and the first shelf holds all the candles and tealight holders.

The middle shelf houses a basket with all those tubes of glue and odd things.  Behind the iron is my hot glue gun and staple gun.  Just some of those necessary things, but handy to get to.

The bottom shelf holds my sewing machine and sewing caddy and on the side I have room for a cloche not in use and some more hurricanes and candlesticks.

There are two bottom drawers.  One holds shells, rocks and all kinds of filler things for vases.  The other one holds all those many spools of ribbon.  I also have two tubs of faux flowers and greenery.  That's it.

I've learned that you don't have to have a lot of dishes to do a lot of different tablescapes.  Things look really different just with the use of different placemats and napkins.  The same dishes will look totally different with just changing those two things.  Add in a different floral arrangement and a whole new table.
The same goes for all of the vignettes throughout the rest of the house.  I use the same things over and over, just with different pieces put together and displayed in a different area or table. Take what you have and use it in a different way and you can change your vignettes as often as often as you like.  It's always fun to play. So now you have seen all my little dirty secrets and hiding places.

Thanks for stopping by, I always appreciate your visits.  Now you know where all that "stuff" is hiding. lol

  6. Marty,

Your storage looks so neat and organized. I keep reminding myself that I do NOT need any more stuff, but to no avail. :) I really do need to stay out of my favorite stores, but you know how it is. They just draw you in..... lol.

  7. Marty, you are so organized! I loved seeing all of your tablescaping and vignette items so neatly stored! Oh, and just think of what you could buy if your husband gave up the rest of those shelves in the garage! Thank you for sharing this. Since I have not learned the art of restraint (and see no signs of learning it in the future), I loved seeing how you store all of your goodies. laurie

  8. Marty,
Our High School motto was. ..
"Where there's a will. . .there's a way." You certainly have a way with storage for all your lovely decor accessories! Thank you for inspiring me, once again, to make some seasonal changes in the dining room. Time to get ready for the upcoming holiday season!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  9. Five years ago my husband and I downsized from a huge two story with FOUR attic closets, to a much smaller home with one walk in closet for storage. I've had to learn the art of using minimum storage for maximum use. It's been a challenge for sure. I think you've mastered that art.

  19. I think the key is to be organized and have some sort of place for everything - which you do so well. Loved seeing the stacks of plates :) I have them too - I have two of those metal shelving units in the garage full of my stuff. But I plan on getting rid of a lot of those things when I work my way into the garage.

  22. Wow, you know it is funny but I was wondering were you kept it all. Very organized. I am going to have to remember the sandwich plate thing, and to not worry about getting the larger plates. I have my stuff stashed here and there and I need to organize it better. Have a great day and I am hoping to join for Tabletop Tuesday, I have been rearranging and getting ready for the big Halloween party.

  28. What timing Marty, I'm just turning a spare room in our basement into a dish room. I am amazed as to how well you have everything organized.

And oh my goodness all those dishes, I thought I was a dishaholic but I'm an amateur compared to you.

  29. Thank you for sharing your secrets to stashing your stash! You are such an inspiration and you answered some questions I've had about my own things. I have a WHOLE shelf unit in the garage that I'm going to completely take over - my sweetheart has three that he uses. I wondered about keeping things clean. Now I know how to cover and protect. I'm off to straighten and start the process.

  31. I have an old armoire that I have been trying to figure out what to do with. My daughter bought at an auction and when she got married she decided she didn't want it. I think if I have hubby add some shelves to it I can store a lot of my stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Great way to store all your wonderful things. I don't have much room in the house for storage of unused items so I use lots of heavy boxes and totes that are labeled and hold specific items for decor or holidays. My totes are stored in an outside storage my husband built.

How often do you go through your drawers and cupboards to weed out the items you no longer want....this is what I have to do everytime I bring in a tote. If I didn't weed out I would probably be called a hoarder!

  33. I'm very impressed with how tidy it all looks. My placemat shelf gets churned upside down everytime I take something out! I need a new plan...

  48. Wow....that was pretty awesome Marty!!! I too learned something new on how to store the napkins, good idea.....I already do that with the fabric in my sewing room, but great idea for the napkins!!! Now, about those stacks of dishes.....wow......is all I can say!!! My stuff is stacked the same way....and that's why it doesn't get used much because its too darn hard to get to!!! Am currently looking for another cabinet for the dining room...I want everything spread out!!! Here's a storage tip.....my tablecloths are on hangars in the hall closet.....in my old house they were all hanging in the guest room closet which was huge, and we had a lot of space.

Thanks for sharing, that was so very brave......hugs....cleo

  51. well girl...your storage is neater than some peoples homes are!!! I am a girl that can pack a lot of stuff into a not so big storage area...kids toys take up a lot of room...can you IMAGINE what I will be able to collect when the toys are gone????? tick tock...tick tock...time seems to be going very slowly in that dept...(I don't want the kids to grow up...just not have the interest in the toys!!! hahaha)

  52. I store my napkins sideways too. Also a tip for between plates, coffee filters, then no scratches in the middle. Takes up very little space too. A girl can never have enough storage.

Of course, I don't have half of your wonderful stash.

Girlfriend, I have kitchen cabinets full...laundry cabinets full...two china hutches full...and now I'm working on filling up my new armiore in the Tea Rose bedroom! Hehe! 66. I think you have things organized really well considering you don't have a lot of extra space. I agree with you about the table settings. I use the same dinner plates many times during the year and I find that changing the dessert/salad plates can change the entire look of the table. I really don't have many napkin rings, we don't use them...so, I don't buy them often and I only have 2 sets of chargers!
