Why Do People Giveaway Silver

My Goodwill is only about 2 miles from me and only about a mile from the grocery store, so I find that I can just drop in several times a week.  I am always amazed at what people give away.

I have a ton of silver, however some of the more unusual serving pieces I don't have.  I headed to the grocery store and of course a trip to GW was in order.  I always see silver.  Tons of trays and quite a few cream and sugar sets.  I have several of each, but today I saw this wine caddy.  It was really tarnished, however a little Tarn-X and it looks like a brand new piece.  The base of the basket even has a cluster of grapes, so pretty.

I've been trying to add a little silver around the house and I thought this piece worked great on the Dining table.

Looks good to me and a great find for $2.99.

I'm off for a day with fellow bloggers and friends out of state, so much fun!!!  Thanks so much for stopping by, I always look forward to your visits.

  5. That is such a unique piece! I have to admit, I have gotten rid of silver. That was when I was younger, had no clue that it would clean up and didn't know how to make it work in my decor. I can't believe I did that!!

  7. Why do people give away silver? Because they have grown weary of keeping it polished. They should hang onto it .. but if they did you wouldn't have your treasure.

  8. I've never seen anything like that. Great find!

  9. What a beautiful piece. I don't know why people discard pretty pieces like that. I found a new silver cleaner that smells good and works quickly. It is by Carbona and they come in wipes ready to just pull out and wipe the silver off. It works quickly and one wipe works for a while and then just rinse and dry. I was surprised at how well they work.

  14. Cute wine caddy. I think people don't want the hassle of polishing silver. Their loss is my gain because I feel the need to rescue all silver I come across!

  15. Marty we don't have a GW in our town, but the thrift store rarely gets anything but cheap silverplate items. I should move where you are, you find the best stuff when you are out thrift shopping! Your wine caddy is beautiful and looks lovely on your table! I hope you have a safe and fun trip today!

  23. Marty, I have NO IDEA why people get rid of silver. One day they might be sorry. I've gotten a huge gorgeous handled tray($4)at a garage sale, as well as a pitcher (3) and a teapot(2), and a champagne bucket at GW ($6). Honestly, I am like you....collecting what I don't have. Good for you! Linda

  24. How lovely! I guess it is that people think it is too much work to keep, or they don't know how to properly clean it.

  25. Very pretty Marty! I like your new silver piece there by your beautiful flowers. Which by the way must be quite a large arrangement in comparison to the size of that wine bottle and holder. It's really lovely!

  28. Marty,
Another great buy! I adore silver! I'll let you in on a little secret. Those silver trays are getting harder to find, so you might want to rethink those at good buys. I've been collecting for a few years. . .trying to get enough to use as chargers for my table. Thanks for another inspiring post! Enjoy your time out with the girls! Is shopping on the agenda?
    Fondly,

  29. I think people are too lazy to polish silver so they give it away. You found a neat piece on your latest GW trip. Hope you had a fun time today!

  33. I don't know! Other than they just don't want to polish it. This is darling. I was admiring all your finds below! I have that egg wreath... and was actually thinking last year that I needed to soup it up. I just need to double down! :)

We did have fun today! :) I hope you guys got some great bargains.

  35. I love silver too. I think they don't want to polish it or it was a wedding gift...and they are no longer married! LOL

I think i need to check out my GW!

  36. When is the wine tasting?
    ;)
I pray you are enjoying your time away with friends!
    Relax and have fun!
I actually an relieved that my GW is about 7 miles away--it is addicting, and I would be there a lot, too.
Every piece of silver I own is either from thrifting or yard sales- and I don't ask why anymore, I just grab it before someone else does :)

  37. Marty, I see stuff like that at mine all the time too, how do I know if it's real silver?

  38. I think that is the greatest piece! I rarely if ever see stuff like that at mine. I still stop by all of the time, though. I'm nothing if not a glutton for punishment.

  39. Hi Marty,
I buy my silver at GW, too. I think in my city that the younger generation is getting rid of the older generations collections as the go into retirement homes or pass away. Their loss is my gain, I love the old silver!
    Hugs, Cindy

  40. I think a lot of people inharit their family silver and they just don't want to deal with polishing it. All the more better for us my dear! Your wine catty is a nice find and what a great price. I'll say it again....I need to start thrifting with you. Enjoy your time with your friends.

  41. Great find Marty! I am going to keep looking for more silver at the GW. I think that people give silver away because they don't want to polish it. That's why I passed up a few good silver pieces at GW. Next time I see a pretty silver piece, I am going to buy it because I've learned that if you store it correctly, then the finish won't tarnish.

  42. I think you made an awesome score ! One's trash, another treasure ,a good thing someone's tastes change !!! I am just happy when people give it to the thrift shops , some toss it in the trash , ouch !! Hope you had a wonderful time with blogger friends !

  43. Great piece!
My husband was surprised when he went looking for a silver punch ladle to find the most beautiful silver wine chiller bucket for only $20! The vendors at the antique shop he was visiting (who were helping him look for a ladle) told him that silver pieces are abundant and inexpensive right now and now is the time to buy it! I seriously think that people just don't want to have to polish it and they get rid of any silver that's been hanging around!

  44. Very pretty wine caddy, I have never seen one like this. I hate to say it but I did get rid of a lot of silver years ago because I did not use it enough to warrent the space it took up. Of course I did save a few of my favorites.Anyway maybe someone is enjoying it like you are.
