Some Things Just Don't Work

The best layed plans of mice and men just don't work sometimes.  I had these gorgeous fabrics and wanted to use them all together.  Well, that turned out a dismal failure no matter how hard I tried.

This is a look at one senario for how to mix them.  Really looks bad in real life.

Another try and it is even worse.  I finally figured out what the problem was, and it is the background color of the gorgeous embroidered piece.  It turns a sort of dirty green brown next to the others.  (How come I couldn't see that before?)

So I just eleminated that one piece of fabric and now have a look that I can live with.  The dark pillow and the small rectangular are both old pillows from when we first moved in 5 yrs. ago.  Guess my taste hasn't changed all that much. lol  However since they match the tableskirt and drapes, they still work beautifully.

I also used this fabric for the jelly roll pillow I gave you the tutorial for here.  Love this fabric.

This fabric is reversible, so I made the pillow with the dark side out on one side and the light on the other.  Love that I can change it around and get double duty out of it.

Here's the light side.

Now we are back to the dark side.  Both are so pretty.

I think for right now I am going to use the dark.

Just a tiny change but one that makes me happy when I see the room.

Ok, now to work on other areas of the house.  I need to spruce up the master bedroom, so I am hunting for inspiration.    Guess all the decorating and fluffing never ends.  Maybe that beige embroidered fabric will work in there?  Hummmmmmmmm  Got me thinking.

Thanks so much for stopping by.  I always look forward to your visits.

  8. Don't you hate it when you go to all the trouble to make and put something together and it just doesn't quite work? And the worst part is SOMETIMES you can't quite figure out exactly WHAT is wrong. It looks nice now, Marty. Your whole setting is lovely! xo Diana

  10. Hi Marty I loved the lighter version. I would use the crewel with the lighter trellis and the ticking. I think trying to add the darker pillows thru off the lighter monochromatic look, IMHO. The darker looks rich and warmer which is good for winter, maybe revisit the lighter version in the Spring. I would place the ticking stripe next to the sofa back with the light trellis in front and then a lumbar pillow in front of both those in the crewel! xo Kathysue

  15. It would be great if you could use that other fabric in another room, Marty! I sometimes am able to do that with some of my stuff {fabric, accessories} and it actually turns out looking really well in the room it winds up in. Your pillows look great. I love that reversible fabric.

  24. Marty, I have always thought your living room looked beautiful but the little decorating touches you are doing is making the room even better. I had thought the room was yellow until you explained the lighting situation. It was pretty " yellow" or this neutral beige. Have a fun weekend.............. shannon

  33. Marty, I understand about wanting a look to work, but for some reason it doesn't. I'm having the same problem with a vignette on my mantle. Your pillow fabrics and arrangements turned out so pretty. The lighter colored fabric you used in the jelly roll pillow is a great pattern. Thanks for the tutorial and have a great weekend,

  34. This is exactly the reason that I want a nice neutral sofa in ONE of my rooms at least. I love the way you can switch it up.

I love your final solution(s, and WHAT?? Reversible fabric? Now, that's cool.

  35. Hi Marty! Your pillows are so pretty! I'm sorry that one fabric didn't work with the others. But I know you'll find a way to use it with another set of pillows! You're so good at mixing the patterns! :)
I love your pretty house and fluffing and changing is one of our sweet pleasures. And of course copying each other! I see something I like and I do try to copy. I try copying you very often. I said 'try'! ;)

  38. Funny, I liked the 2nd picture when I saw it.... why not move those three to the right and keep the plain one and the ones that match the table skirt on the left? Just a thought...I don't give up easily! Perhaps in person it feels much different than on the screen but my honest first thought was that the 2nd picture looked good! In fact that small pillow that matches the skirt looks like it would sit great on the chair to the left?

  39. Funny, Marty, sometimes when we love something so much, we feel it necessary to make it work. I do like the darker pillow best on your couch. The one that was throwing me off was the geometric pattern. I think for your traditional warm taste it is just sort of too modern for the room. We all know things change for us on a daily basis, so you will certainly figure it out Marty!

  42. Oh .... I love it!!! but what about the unexpected??? a tad of a touch of a bright color in a small pillow?! Like a turquoise? a red? Orange?? I have a white living room ... furniture, walls, carpet are all off white .... I use different color pillows to "pop" it. I use red pillows, with a red throw rug! green pillows w/green rug...... yellow/w yellow ... blue/blue, etc. Love to accessorize. thanks for your info ... I follow your blog daily!
