Is Aqua Dead

I love all of the autumn colors and the oranges, yellows and greens are fabulous for summer, but I am in the mood for a new color scheme.  I am not a blue person (except I like to wear it), but I have fallen in love with some of the more green aqua colors.  Seems like I get hooked on a color just as it winds down in popularity.  Is Aqua Dead?

I never look at the $40 to $50 yd. fabric, however I found two that just stole my heart, so I bought 1/2 yd. of each for some pillows.  For now I think I will try these in the living room, but they actually match my master bedroom perfectly.

I love that my room is so neutral that you can put just about any color in the world in here and it looks fine.  This is a really cool soft look for a change.

I found a cotton fabric for the back of the pillows that matches the aqua perfectly, so I was able to get two pillows out of each 1/2 yd.  Great way to stretch your dollars when using really expensive fabric, just use it for the pillow fronts.  I also had a remnant piece of gold fabric that matched the gold ribbon on the fabric and used that for the cording.  Saved some money and used up my remnants.

I had a small piece of this stripe fabric left from other projects,  so I made a table topper for the table.   I thought I needed something a little lighter and the gold stripe tied in with the gold ribbon on the pillows.

The gimp trim and tassels were also in my stash, so I managed to create something with a little character and spent zero dollars.  The tassels were a last minute thought, but I really like them.

Just a small aqua hydrangea in this arrangement and it ties in with the aqua in the picture frame and the easel.

I replaced the white candles with two aqua ones and done.

There is aqua in the painting in the dining area, so that ties it together also.

Again just one more hydrangea in this bouquet and it all works.

These are the colors you always see me use.  Definitely my favorite, but a change is fun. and especially if it's just the cost of a couple of pillow covers.

It always amazes me how some simple changes can change the entire feel of the room, and for $50.   Love it.

  2. Marty, funny that you posted this! I just put up a post using these colors for fall! I was never really a blue person; but, I kept seeing this color mixed in with the warm colors that I like. I tried it; and I am in love!

  3. I can't believe I am going to say this....but I love the aqua in that room....actually a little better than the oranges and greens. Seems softer...both are beautiful...but the aqua is gorgeous!

  4. Oh- I am just like you, Marty- I always seem to catch the bandwagon as it ends. lol I was watching some TV show today and they said they were so sick of seeing chalkboard projects they could throw up....so...I am thinking THAT might be on it's way out, too. As far as aqua, I think that is kind of a staple-especially in waterside areas- xo Diana (no waterfront? Well, you can always keep your bathtub filled!;>)

  6. Marty, no aqua is not dead! I walked in to Hobby Lobby and the first large display I saw was a table full of Turquoise and Aqua urns, bowls, and large pieces, all in these colors. I have neutrals too, and the turquoise was a little harsh for my decor, but I definitely said to myself, "self, you need some aqua to add to your living room" and I thought maybe once a month I would splurge and pay retail (choke) for a special piece to add to my decor in the summer. Then I could go back to my favorites, fall colors, the rest of the year. But the pillow idea sounds like a money saver and could save me a bit of retail bucks. I know some people call it retail therapy, but I always need therapy after I've spent the retail prices! ha! These pieces in Hobby Lobby started at about $30.00 and went on up from there, but Hobby Lobby has great sales, so I will be searching their ads. Thanks for this wonderful idea, Marty, your room looks so calm, comforting, and easy to be in. Very inviting! Judy

  9. I think the small pops of aqua totally changed your wall color and took all the gold tone out of it. Thats a great thing, right? cause I have seen you say many times they arent the goldish color they usually photograph as.. now they are a soft neutral beige and it all look terrific to me. its like a totally new room~! beautiful pillows you made too.

  10. Hi Marthy,
I agree with the other comments - Aqua isn't dead, even not in Germany. You are totally in trend with your pillows. Beautiful color and looks very luxury and elegant.

  11. Marty,
Your Aqua fabric and subtle touches throughout the room are stunning! Tranquil and elegant! I noticed the topper in the overall photo and thought how well your color palette accentuates all your furnishings. Appears to be some aqua (blue) in the print reflected in the mirror, as well! Lovely transformation!
    Fondly,

  19. I don't think any color is dead. If you enjoy having it in your life, then enjoy it. Sometimes blogging makes us tire of things too quickly - so go with your gut. By the way, that mirror above your sofa is gorgeous!

  20. I hope not! I'm loving aqua right now even though I'm a green/red/gold kind of girl! Your room is gorgeous; love the aqua hydrangeas and how they tie everything together!

  21. Not in my book it isn't. My living room has deep aqua wingback chairs with tan and terracotta walls, and the couch is a tan neutral. Master bedroom-- aqua patchwork quilt with soon to be sage walls. Master bath, Aqua towels, soon to be white wainscoting and soft yellow above. I love aqua. And I don't care what's in style, I stick with what I love. I love your living room aqua updates. So classy and soothing. Great job!!

  22. Marty I love what you have created; wishing that I were a seamstress! No, No No aqua is not going out of style! I have new bedding from the Pottery Barn sidewalk sale here that is a Porcelain Blue, which is in reality a gorgeous light aqua! It is so soft and soothing.

I think what keeps a color current is mixing up the patterns, styles, patterns etc!

  35. Nothing is more pleasing to my eye than the gorgeous, watery shade of aqua. On walls or a pillow or even just a touch in a floral arrangement, it is always right, it always fits. I also consider aqua to be almost a neutral. I always try to change out a few color accents in my living room with the changing seasons, but the aqua ALWAYS stays.
Besides, since color trends come and go so quickly, if you find a color you really love, use it as long as you love it!

  43. From a retail perspective I would say most definitely not! We are still selling it like crazy in all shades and people are continuously asking for it. I currently am into a more deeper type of turquoise, but the lighter aqua is just as favorable. I love your new pillows and the candles add just the right amount more. Beautiful!

  58. If aqua is dead, then my house must be a funeral home. One of my favorite colors, I don't plan to give it up, ever. I think people should use the colors they like, those which make them feel good, and not give two thoughts to whether something is "in" or not.

Your pillows look great, and when I was working as a decorator, I often used an expensive face fabric with a more budget friendly one on the back.
