Cleaning & Organizing the China Cabinet

I love my china cabinet, but it can get to be a real mess really fast.  I just have too much stuff.  I try to purge, but most everything in it belonged to either my mom or my mother-in-law, so they are very precious to me.  Then I also have this addiction of finding fabulous silver at Goodwill and I just can't seem to pass it up when it is so pretty and so cheap.
This is a picture of what a mess I had going.

I took everything out and couldn't believe I have so much stuff in there.

This is totally unreal, no wonder it is such a mess.

Ok, everything out and all the shelves and the mirror on the back all clean and sparkly.

Nothing is going back in except silver and crystal.  The first two shelves look so much better.  Figuring out how to display my silver and crystal in an attractive manner is always a challenge.

The next two, at least I can see what I have now.

The bottom shelf.  I had 8 round silver trays that I can use as chargers, so I put them in with my other chargers and that saved a lot of room.

Still super full, but so much better and everything is all clean and shiny.

I have the large tray with the coffee and tea service on the buffet, but I can put it in by just rearranging a couple of the trays whenever I change up the buffet vignette.

This is a big job every time I pull it all out and clean so I always put it off for a long time.  Do you have a big job that you put off too?

  4. Oh my. That cabinet was full indeed Marty! It looks much better with some culling and organizing. You have some very beautiful pieces and I can see why you are attached to them. I have boxes of crystal that I need to get rid of. They aren't and won't ever be used by me. That is my job that needs to be done. Have a good week Marty.

  9. Your cabinet redo is just gorgeous! My mother has an antique cupboard similar to yours - and I have always liked how you can really SEE INTO it! What a great idea to use silver serving trays for chargers. How do you clean everything? or do you keep it natural looking?

  14. Marty,
I love how you've displayed the re~arrange by putting the silver primarily in the center with the crystal to either side!!! Exquisite!!!
Today, I worked on 3 (three) junk drawers...but I'm putting the one in the Master Bedroom off 'til this week!!! I just despise organizing (attacking) junk drawers!!!
    Thanks for the inspiration!!!
    Fondly,

  19. I love your china cabinet, too. It really showcases your silver and crystal beautifully. That really was a lot of work getting things organized, but it look great now.
The space I hate to tackle is my clothes closet. It holds clothes, but it's also a catch all for things I don't have another place to store...like a craft box and photo boxes. I really need to rethink my closet. Thanks for the inspiration and for hosting.

  28. Marty...Your cabinet looks really pretty. I used to clean and organize my grandmothers curio every year or so. I broke something precious every time (crystal). She was nice about it though.
