How To Create A New Color Scheme

Ok, you guys all know that I change my color scheme in the living room about every 15 minutes (exaggeration), but I do change it a lot.  I love having a neutral base and a few pillows and accessories can do wonders to change things up for a totally different look.

This is what my living room has looked like for a while now.  I think a change would be nice.

I found several fabrics at the discount fabric store that I think might work.  You only need 1/2 yd for two pillow fronts, so you can buy several different fabrics and then play with them to see how they would work.  Most of these were $7.95 yd, so $4 for 1/2 yd.  That's thrifty enough to play.

First, I layed a white tablecloth over my current table, I need a neutral backdrop.

I just drape pieces of fabric over pillow forms so I can get an idea of how the colors and patterns go together.   The picture doesn't do this combination justice.  I actually like the check with the floral.  Maybe I can find a green check.

This combination is ok, but the green pillow and the circle fabric aren't the same green and actually they clash a little.  It's ok with the floral, but not the green solid pillow

These are actually really pretty together in real life, but not as summery as I would like.

Now this combination is really bright and cheery.  With the right accessories, this could be fun and definitely look like summer.  (Can you tell I am hot and just want something bright, cheery and fresh looking.)

I bought several fabrics for a new fall look too, we'll have to play with those another day.  I did finally create three different looks that work, I'll show you all of them when I'm done.  Stay tuned.

  4. Marty,
Bright, cheery and refreshing hues for new pillow covers, indeed!!!
That green and brown floral is one I've seen in Ballad Designs catalog,
but couldn't afford their price for our back deck!
I'll be back soon to see which ones you settled with and I'll admit,
I'm anxious to begin bringing in hues of Autumn!!!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  11. Marty, I love your mixing and matching of fabrics, that is one of my favorite things to do!

I like the combination in picture number three, and agree that a green check would be perfect.

I had to laugh when I saw your last picture. The green and white geometric is the fabric that I used for my pillow post! Love that fabric!

  12. I like the first and third. Even though the first is not perfect one of the fabrics has both greens which makes it interesting and playful, but in a more formal space such as yours I agree that the third is best in this particular series.

  15. I love the green you chose. Very fun and bright. Pillows are a great way to add a different color or look to a room. I love changing mine up for the seasons.

  21. In my head, my living room sofa looks just like yours.
In reality, it looks like someone traveled back in time to the '90s and brought back a sofa souvenir. If I ever get the new one I want, I'm going to be a lean, mean, color changing machine.

    Just. Like. You.
