Which Camp Are You In - Color or White

It seems like we have two camps when it comes to decorating.  Right now it is really popular to have an all white room, shabby chic and void of any color.  Then we have the homes that are filled with color and pattern from top to bottom.  I am more into the middle of these two, (a little color and pattern), but I am getting braver and using more and more color too.

I love seeing others use fabulous colors and patterns in their homes.  It makes their spaces so interesting and inviting.  Some of my favorite bloggers have a knack for creating such great color schemes and using pattern in such effective ways.

Now isn't this just the happiest room?  Jennifer at Dimples and Tangles is not the least bit afraid of color or pattern and her home is fabulous.  How could you not be happy surrounded by these colors and patterns.

Green is her favorite color and she mixes it well with the navy and black in her entry.

Now how about these color and patterns from KariAnne at Thistlewood Farm

and this chest she did just screams fun.

Then there is Kristin from Bliss @ Home and how she uses pattern on her walls.  I love the stenciled wall and the stripes she added to her entry.

She's not afraid of color either, as you can see in her bedroom.

I love how Beth at Home Stories A to Z has both going on.  Her family area and kitchen are more into the white/neutral family.  However some of her other rooms are filled with color.  Don't you love this darker blue with touches of yellow for her boys room.

I think this is such a happy room, full of color.  Her guest bedroom doubles as her office too.  Now who wouldn't be happy to spend time in here.

These ladies all have more style in their little finger than I have in my whole body.  I love seeing what they come up with next.   If you aren't familiar with their blogs, you definitely need to go visit.  They have tons of diy and thrifty projects they share and you will definitely be inspired.

So tell me, what camp are you in.  Color, middle or white?

See you this afternoon for Inspire Me, party will be live a 3PM CMT.

  1. Marty, I go back and forth with color too! I have a few rooms that are calmer with less color and the rest are kind of in the middle. I love that picture you posted of Beth's boys' room. I am thinking of painting my boys' bathroom something like that - and her office could definitely inspire me to add some coral somewhere too! I wish I had an extra house to play around with...
    Enjoy your week!

  2. Last week I would've said the white camp as I've been slowly painting all my furniture white, mostly Behr's Swiss Coffee. But, last Wednesday hubs and I stopped in to see "Three French Hens" shop in Wildwood Missouri when we were traveling through the area and the colorful interiors and furniture in the shop just might inspire me to go back to color. They are on Facebook and Pinterest if you're interested. I'm hoping to feature them soon.

  3. I'm in the middle with you although I'm still trying to figure out my decorating style. I like colour and decided to paint my rooms using colours but it didn't work for me. I'm in the process of painting them back and have discovered I like a lot of white, beige and dark brown with pops of colour.

  4. I love seeing white, but I couldn't live without color!

  5. I think I'm kind of middle of the road right now, Marty. I had a lot of color in our old house so it was nice to come into our condo that had neutral walls and live with that for awhile. I am finding that I like bringing color in when I want it in accessories, pillows, or throws.

  6. You did a fantastic job! I really enjoy when you feature this type of work. While I realize that you definitely choose different finishes based on sell-ability, it's really nice that you at least go way better than the standard "builder grade" stuff that's been seen. You've got my dream job- I'd love to pick finishes like this! Anyway, great job.

  7. Marty I love the look of both styles but I am a color girl and can't live without it!

  8. Most of my house is white or minimal color, but every once in awhile I need a splash of bold color like my neon green rocker on my front porch! ;)

  9. I love both, but I always seems to be drawn to the neutral calm colors. Even my "pops of color" are earthy tones.

  10. Definitely color for me! The more, the "happier" ~ :) I love each of these blogs and admire their creativity constantly.

Sorry I haven't been around...have missed your posts! Computer problems that have been...and are...so frustrating! Hope you have a wonderful Sunday.

  11. Marty, this post is something I have been thinking about writing about as well. It seemed that the blogs went "white crazy" for awhile there. I love seeing a lot of it but, for me it got boring real quick. I like to have some white here and there but, I love color.I think i would go insane in a "white home". I have to admit, my comfort zone is warm neutrals but, I am adding more and more unexpected pops of color.

  12. Hi Marty,
I am a white and cream girl with a little color here and there but I love my neutrals. I love seeing color with other blogs and love it too. I think if you go with what you love it will always feel inviting and home. It is so much fun to see all the different decor options. I love that I connect with so many bloggers that love color while I love white. That amazes me that I connect and have such great friendships with the "colorful" bloggers. I guess it proves my point you have to live with what you love it is only a part of your personal style.

  13. Marty, I'm with Diann, I would go crazy in a home with just one color-be it white, or gray etc. I love a dash of color here and there. My go to colors are blue and white, coral,Tiffany blue. For little touches of pizzazz-gold, textures-rattan, sisal, faux fur, silk dupioni. Love your blog, your posts are always so cheerful and inspiring!

  14. I'm right in the middle. I like neutral walls with pops of color in my pillows, curtains, etc. I am a green girl myself and have it in every room of my house. I have had green for almost 8 years now and I never tire of it. It works so well with other colors that I can just change those out and leave the green.

  15. Hmmm, I guess I sit on the fence Marty. I have lots of white painted furniture , and creamy white walls. But I splash colour on with accessories. To me a neutral back drop is a necessity for the way I decorate. Tried coloured walls and they frustrated me. However, I luv seeing the bright , bold rooms in hlogland. And the sweet all white ones as well.

  16. I love white and grey but with the small kids its pretty hard. I always end up with black and colors. I love a white kitchen. Xo

  17. Hi Marty! I guess it depends on the room but I really like color too. I guess I'm in the middle. I'm brave to some extent but conservative on my colors if that makes sense, except red! :)
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia :)

  18. I think you know I am am ivory/beige/brown/earthy green and some black lover. My home is very earthy and calming.

I don't have any all white, but ivory and introducing a little grey lately.

I think I am totally allergic to bold and bright colour.

  19. I would have to say I'm in the middle. I love those white, gray & neutral rooms without color, yet there's a part of me that screams for bold, bright, vivid & happy color. :)

  20. Hi Marty, I think these rooms are all BEAUTIFUL, so much color and interest. I'm in both camps, I think. I love neutrals, but always end up adding color, mostly monochromatic color. I love seeing people doing really bold things and I enjoy studying their spaces, because , as is the joy of design -- it's fun to look at what you love but not necessarily live with every day. Thanks for sharing these inpsiring images!

  21. Well, what a nice surprise, thank you Marty! You've posed an interesting question...I'll enjoy reading the comments! And for the record, you definitely ARE one stylish lady!

  22. I'm for sure in the Color Camp!!! And prefer neutral walls and carpets to showcase all the colorful items. My dream is to have hardwood floors with a multitude of Oriental carpets!! Love red, blues, some purples and a shot of yellow now and then. I also have a love for brown, sepia tones and sienna.......I need more rooms to decorate!!!

  23. Guess I'm in middle also. Love color but need to be in mood for it. Recently we painted our living room light gray with some darker gray on frames, some accessories, couple shades of aqua and little coral. Since our living room and kitchen are right by each other I painted a top cabinet light gray with dark gray trim on front, took doors off for my bowl collection. The cupboards are going to be light gray with darker gray doors. We have one wall that runs thru l/r, kitchen and mud room, it's a single wide mfg. home .I found some great gray curtains with white design on them, that's what really started the gray idea.
Had no idea before what I really wanted. The light gray is almost white so makes a small l/r look bigger and much lighter. I made a gallery on one wall which I'd never done before, made all new art. The theme is shabby chic/beach/cottage. I was so inspired by so much I saw on blog land. Guess what I saw kinda fermented in my head til I saw those gray curtains. Worked out great and so happy. Have my shades of aqua, picture frames, darker painted lamp shade. A wicker lamp painted the same shade as other lamps shade, and a wicker white lamp shade on it. I've never been one for same lamps. Like to mix it up. We painted our wicker glass coffee table white also. I am loving the changes, With the kitchen cabs being grays I'm going to paint the portable island the deeper aqua shade I have on lamps/shade in l/r.
I loved what you showed us in bloggers homes, I kinda keep ideas in my head then when it works for me I use some little part of it for what I want.
I enjoy so much seeing bloggers homes, how they decorate, what they do to change things. This was a great post, thought provoking. Happy summer days

  24. Im sure you can guess this but Im on team COLOR all the way. Im not a fan at all of the white interiors trend Ive seen so much of lately. I love colorful spaces because they seem so full of life and joy:)

  25. Marty, I love color also! I have tried going lighter, but it just doesn't work for me. I am always attracted to all the pretty, bright and colorful fabrics. Great post!

  26. I guess I'm more in the color camp although lately I've been using more neutral colors and loving that. So, in the middle? I'm off to visit the other blogs! Hugs,

  27. I am more of your soft subtle colors and light colors. The hardest thing for me to do is to step out of my comfort zone and Bring It up a notch! Trying to get a little bolder! Hugs and blessings, Cindy

  28. i love love that navy and black entry...although i may say that i am not afraid of colors, i am afraid of using it on something that is kind of long-term and expensive like furnitures - but really i am afraid of colors, i don't know how to use them..it makes me scared because everytime i try to change my color scheme it always would gear towards yellow (my favorite color)...i guess i am still trying to find my design style :(

  29. Marty I am a color camper for sure!!! Love this post and what pretty rooms you chose to highlight the beauty of color in a space.Although I have been kicking around a neutral color scheme for whenever I redo our kitchen.
Thanks for sharing and have a great week!

  31. Great inspiration! I would definitely say middle. I prefer white, cream, gray, but like to add in accent colors in small doses. I paint a lot of furniture, but have difficulty with having bold furniture in my own home...maybe because I like a more neutral backdrop so I can change things up frequently.

  34. Color! Pattern! the more the merrier and of course a nice neutral ground to ground it all! I am so happy to see color coming back in fashion, white is unrealistic to me and boring~

  35. I too, am in the middle. Once in a while I gather a little nerve and then chicken out. Once we decided to paint one wall in the dining room a deep wine color. I couldn't get back to Lowe's quick enough to buy a gallon of good old fashioned eggshell!!!

  36. I'm a color girl, but yes, I love white too!!!!

  37. Definitely color...love color...and the above are great examples and inspiration..

  38. I am like you Marty I am sort of in the middle. I love both............and I made my living room pretty much totally white for about
2 1/2 years and love, love, loved it but this spring I decided to throw in just a lil color, I used pink, then for Summer I took the
pink out and added a lil blue and am enjoying it very much. Also did my kitchen with a lot of White, but then I had cobalt blue
countertops and wallpaper with blues, berry red, golden yellow and green on a white background, so that was the color.
I am real bug on the distressed Shabby look, a touch is fine, but I like a more clean fresh look. I do like color, but not to
into primary colors myself, altho, I like it in other peoples homes, just not in mind. My daughter used a lot of primary colors
and it looks great, just not me. I love seeing all the ways that others do their houses, so neat that we all have our own style
and creativity, and it is all good. You always do a wonderful job on your home. Always enjoy my visits.
Thanks for asking, I probably told you more than you wanted to know.............lol
    Blessings, Nellie

  40. Hi Marty, I love color! Although I may be a lover of color in a but more subdued way. I love the rich jewel tones. Saying that I do like a white wall or sofa if it's loaded with beautiful rich pillows or art with a richness to it. So I am old school I suppose.

  41. While I love looking at all the blogs with whites and neutrals I think I would get very tired living with it. Bring me some color!

  42. I have been pretty neutral for a LONG time...but I've started adding pops of vintage color and LOVE it :)

  43. This was a great post, and it was so much fun to read the other bloggers' comments to see where they prefer to be. I am definitely a color gal, although I try to do a more subdued look for summer because the outrageously colorful seasons are closer at hand than we realize......lol! My wearing apparel is usually quite colorful, too. I don't think a lot of people realize that they tend to dress in the same colors that they decorate their homes with. I saw that all the time when I was in the interior design business.

  44. So glad to be back and TRYING to catch up on my blogs! I am a COLR girl. The all white rooms and houses that are so popular right now are just not me. I NEED color and in fact all my white walls are making me a bit NUTS!!! I am dying to PAINT and get some color in here! Hopefully soon. Thanks for introducing me to some new blogs!
