Fabric-Color-Pattern

This fabric pattern has been around for quite a while and I have drooled over it forever.  I didn't even know the name of it until a while ago when a friend shared with me.  It is Schumacher's Chiang Mia Dragon.  It comes in several different color backgrounds and I am totally smitten.   Just one small problem, it is $165 a yard and every place I looked had a minimum of 2 yards.  Wow, that makes me stop and re-evaluate just how much I like it.  Since I had never seen the fabric in person, only in a ton of pictures in magazines and online, I thought I would order a sample of two of the colors.

Much to my surprise, these 20 x 20 inch samples came in the mail.  This one with the white background is called Alabaster colorway.

The Aquamarine background is my favorite.

I ordered several samples of all kinds of different prints and much to my surprise I had ordered these twice.  This sample actually came with part of the coveted dragon on it.

Now I am not sure if I am going to bit the bullet and spend that kind of money just so I can have the Dragon.  I may just make these into pillows and get my fix that way.

So have you drooled over this or any other fabric for a while?

  1. Those are VERY generous samples! Where did you order them from? I would totally make what you have into pillows with a cute contrasting fabric on the back. The flowers are actually my favorite part of the design, I could take the dragon or leave it. See? Now you know why my two yards were my Mother's Day and Anniversary gifts that year. ;) My designer friend got a little better deal, but still!

    1. I ordered the samples from Decorators Best. All of the samples I ordered were very generous and they were only $5 a sample. Great advice, I think I will do that.

  3. This is one of the best kept secrets in the design world! I have often used the large samples to make pillows with. I am not familiar with that site, but I am going to look it up now!

  4. You me both Marty! I love that fabric too, esp. the blue one, however, the price is also putting me off, I may try ordering the samples too and see if a pillow can still be made from it! Good luck with your decision!

  5. W hen I first became aware of that fabric about a year ago ( from reading Jennifer's blog, D and T) I looked it up on E bay one day, not thinking to find anything. To my surprise there were several options there, perhaps because it IS so well known and popular. I'm not very skilled at tracking things down online, but I'll bet a lot of you are. I. do feel, the more volume of any one item, the better the chance of scoring a deal, and like I said, this print seems VERY popular.

  6. I looked it up on Ebay also, sorry no deals. It is just really super expensive. I did find one company that was selling it for $149 a yard yesterday, with a 2 yd. min. Still more than I want to pay. I have decided the two sample were such a generous size that it was indeed a gift and I am just going to make pillows out of them.

  7. Love the fabric and they will make terrific pillows. We have a discount fabric store here that only sells designer fabrics. That's were I buy all my fabric for drapes, bedspreads, etc Sometimes you have to wait a little while, but it always comes in. Will look and see if they have this. I call it the $2.00 fabric store, but that's not the name. Will look it up and send you the information. They have stores all over the USA.
    Have a great weekend.

    2. If it is the one on Cactus an 32nd'ish, they have a $2.00 store at 19th ave and thunderbird. I have not looked for this fabric at either store but wouldnt expect to find it but you never know. You coud frame out those samples and wind up with a larger portion of it showing on the front of your pillow.

  9. Why do I think there is going to be a rush on samples from "Decorator's Best?" ;) Great idea!

  10. Love your samples! That fabric is gorgeous, but I'm not sure any fabric is worth that price. I'd just work with the samples if I were you. With your sewing skills, you can make beautiful pillows from these samples!

  11. Hi Marty, when I ordered a sample from Decorator's Best I noticed a message at the top saying samples should be returned to the manufacturer when you are finished with them. Is this a new policy?

    1. There was a note when I got mine that said samples didn't have to be returned, that was an option.
