Family Room Reveal

I love how light and bright the family room is now with the new white paint.  This room was white before, but it was a sort of yellow white.   I chose Reliable White by Sherwin Williams and it is a gorgeous warm white.  No yellow, pink, or grey undertones.  Just a really clear soft white.  This photo is taken standing next to the kitchen island and shows how the kitchen, family room and breakfast area are all one space.

Do you remember what it looked like before?

I really enjoyed the check drapes for a while, but I was delighted to be able to give them to my son for his house remodel.  They are perfect there.  I was also really ready to get rid of the wood blinds.  They collect so much dust and they were beyond one more cleaning.  Time to go.

One thing that bothered me was how the buider used shorter windows in this room.  See all that wall space above the window.  I wanted that covered, so hanging the shades outside the frame and higher gives the room balance.

Remember when I showed you these roman shades I found on clearance at Lowes back in November.    I got all 7 of them for $28.  Now that is what I call a real bargain.

The shades are a grass cloth type fabric and lined with a semi sheer cream color.  The drapes are a makeover.

Remember these from the living room.  I just removed the valance at the top.

They look like a totally different pair and the shades hung high under the rods looks so much better.  Now the windows look in proportion to the height of the ceiling.

The breakfast area window looks so much better too.

I didn't add the gallery back to this wall.  I like the idea of just the mirror for now.  I may add sconces later, I just need to live with this for a while.

I didn't totally reinvent the wheel, the pillows and coffee table stayed the same.

I did shuffle the end tables around.  I put the candle table next to my chair on this side of the sofa and added a small vignette.

I also moved the gate leg drop leaf table under the window between the two chairs on this wall.  I love the larger size here and there's room for another fun vignette.

So what do you think?  Now when I get the hardwood floors installed, it will look totally different and so nice and fresh.

I have a lot more painting to do.  Living room, dining area and hall are next.  How about you, are you tackling any room makeovers?

  33. Everything looks absolutely beautiful Marty! It's so funny because just tonight I was thinking about how I really want to take down the blinds in our family room so this was the affirmation I needed. Well done!

  34. Marty, you have some great decorative items. Where do you keep them all? I know you showed us your laundry room where you keep many things, but I can't believe everything fits in there. lol

Of all the blogs I subscribe to, I'd have to say I like yours the best. I think it's because you have a home that is more in line with the average family. Nice size, but not extremely huge with large rooms that can be filled with many items. How you use your space most people would be able to accomplish also. Decorating that anyone can do, even on a budget. I have gained some great ideas from your blog. Thank you for sharing your beautiful and wonderful home with us!

Oh, I am tackling all the rooms in my house. One at a time. It is time for some new updates. Some rooms are getting a top to bottom, some just new paint and window treatment. My bathroom is getting a major redo from tub to floor to vanity.

Sorry this comment got so long. Keep it coming, you have a faithful fan!

  35. Love the new room color and the way you mounted the roman shades. I like the curtains you put back in there too! The wall with the mirror looks great- I did something similar with a recent change in my kitchen nook. I lived with the wall blank for a bit before I fialized my ideas for the space.

  41. It looks wonderful, Marty! Yes, much brighter; not that you had a dark color there to begin with. I love the new shades. I'm sure hanging them high has brought more light into the space, too.

  44. The mirror without the gallery creates a nice, strong focus--especially with all the vignettes on the tables and with the gallery on the adjoining breakfast area wall. It is a beautiful mirror, Marty, and glad you brought it front and center. Good eye.

  45. Hi again Marty,
Think your family room looks wonderful. What a deal on those shades, oh my goodness..... and love how they look, and you did an amazing job with the curtains. Your wood floors are gonna look great with this, and just the mirror looks great for the
winter, cause seems like a more minamalist look works best for me since it is so bare outside. lol
Nice you were able to get those lovely curtains from your daughter for your living room and then pass the buffalo check ones
onto your son...........now that is good recycling...........lol
I loved your buffalo checks ones too.......very pretty

    Have a great week,
    Blessings, Nellie

  48. The room looks fabulous Marty and a very clever layout for your furniture. I have a small open plan space and struggle to work out how to place dining table so I leave it dropped down against a wall. I was wondering how large your space is?

  50. Your house looks so fresh and beautiful! It's always amazing what paint and some window treatment do to revamp our homes, but than again, it is like face make up, the rest is like dressing it up.
