Family Room/Breakfast Area Makeover Part 2

I have discovered that I have to take a day here and there as time permits to paint.  When I painted the family room, I had to really hurry and get the room put back together because we were hosting a Super Bowl party.  It was wonderful to have that part of the space done and all put back together, but that left one area still not painted.

Time just didn't permit me to paint this area at the same time.

I painted this part of the space - - You can see the reveal here.

- - - but the breakfast area wall didn't get painted.

See how this wall ties into the kitchen and also is an open doorway with no moldings that leads into the living/dining area.

This is the dining side of that same wall.

So last week I took another day and tackled this area.

When I took the shelf and all the plates and picture down, I couldn't believe how many nail holes I had in this wall.  It looked like swiss cheese from so many different vignettes over the years.

I love the new white color and here you can see just how different it is from the old color.

How fresh and bright does this look.  I love it.

I think it's also time to update the chandy just a little.  I love the mustard color of the wood, however those shades really need to go.

I ordered 6 of these pretty linen ones from Amazon.  I think these will update the chandy perfectly.  Not sure if I am going to leave them plain or add some kind of trim or something.  I'll just have to live with them for a while.

I plan on using the shelf again on the wall and of course my wonderful Old Man Giving Thanks picture, but I think I will try to update the shelf and wall area just a little bit.  It was looking pretty country to me and that's not my thing at the moment.

I have a pair of fabulous wood candle sconces that I want to use with the picture, but when I took them down out of the hall I put them somewhere so good I can't find them.  The hunt has caused me to completely clean the garage, all our closets, under the beds and anywhere else I could have possibly put them.  So far I still can't find them.  This has me totally frustrated.  Hopefull they will turn up, it is driving me crazy.  Do you stash things so good you never find them again too?

Be sure to get all of your projects lined up for Inspire Me Tuesday.  Party goes live Monday afternoon at 3 PM CMT.  Can't wait to see you there.

  5. Marty, I can not wait to see what you will do with your wall and shelf. I have the old man giving thanks picture too. I do not think I would ever get rid of it. I am sure whatever changes you make will be as classy and wonderful as always.

  6. First off the new wall color looks SO good! It really brightens the space. Second I am totally laughing as I am currently searching for 3 things that I hid too well from myself. :)

  8. Hi Marty- I love this new paint color. What a difference! I also love the framed piece of artwork previously on the wall. I'm getting ready to paint my kitchen (and ceiling). Dreading it! ha! laura

  9. Hi…it's certainly fun to update a room! Have you considered hanging your shelf lower and placing the framed pic above it, off center? Have fun decorating!

    1. The picture is a little deceiving as to how large this shelf is. It measure 20 inches tall and the shelf depth is 8 inches. That's not deep enough to act like a buffet shelf, and for this area, it would make the walk space behind chairs impossible. It needs to be high enough to walk under or moved somewhere else.

  10. Everything is looking so fresh! We so need to paint our house, inside and out!! I have to let the hubby think it's his idea though, so I'll get working on that! :) I'm looking forward to seeing how you decorate the wall when you are through. Speaking of "losing" things you put away, I just this moment found a runner I had looked for, for some time! Whew!! I'm good at putting things away really good like that. Have a great Sunday!

  11. Beautiful job on your breakfast area Marty. I hope you find those sconces. I do that same thing and it drives me crazy on where I could have stored things too. Everything looks so great.

  12. This color has so much complexity. If my cabinet maker hadn't already bought the paint for the dining room cab doors, I would have changed it. I have many Swiss cheese walls. :-) Love your new shades. Can't wait for the reveal!

  13. Do you have any different ideas for hanging the wall shelf and accessories that doesnt involve nails? Im hesitant to rehang my pictures because we painted our walls and they look so pretty and new.

    1. Sorry, I already have holes in my new paint job. The shelf is so heavy it had to be hung with wall anchors that put a really big hole in the wall. I just keep some putty and touch up paint on hand, so if I change things, I can just repaint the small nails holes. They never show.

  17. God Bless you girl! I don't know how you remember to take all the pictures. I keep forgetting until my projects are done! My hat is off to you for a beautiful new look. It is wonderful! Yes, it does take time and energy to update! The results are always gratifying! Can't wait to see the finished room. I know you will find the sconces. Sometimes I look for things I have given away! lol

  18. The new coloris so pretty, bright and refreshing! Great job! As for losing things: I lost my favorite jacket this winter! I KNOW it is in this house cause I know what day I lost it. It is ridiculous that I can not find it:( UGH!!! Hope you find your sconces. I also am missing a pair of beautiful glass pillar holders. Those may turn up but the jacket has me BAFFLED!

    1. I am so thrilled to find out that so many of you put things somewhere and you can't find them either. I think I am losing my mind. I love these sconces, they were a special gift and I really want to find them.

    2. LOL I lost one shoe a while ago and it made me crazy! It showed up eventually and wasn't far from where I'd been looking... I guess I was in too much of a hurry. You'll find them I'm sure :-)

  19. The new color looks great - worth all your hard work! I am still looking for things that I put away when decorating for Christmas....

  20. I hope this doesn't sound in bad taste, but when we can't find something we just blame it on "Mary". She was the previous owner of our home and has passed away shortly after we bought the house. When it does turn up it's usually in a place we can't figure out why it would be there! So usually when something is not where we thought we put it we say, "Mary, put the (insert item lost) back!" LOL

Everything is looking great for your new reveal!

  22. Paint is such a great refresher, Marty. I've been finding that out myself! I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with holes in the wall. I think that is the only thing my husband sees when I've hung something new up - another hole in the wall! Yes, I have put things away so good that I can't find them again. I have to sit back and wonder if I wound up donating it and not keeping it after all.

  23. We repainted the family room last January complete with beadboard ceiling. After patching so many holes in the walls Ai just can't bring myself to put another hole in the wall. I've been hanging stuff with command Velcro strips. (Even 1 large picture that hubby swore would be on the floor within a month). I had one picture that was just propped against the wall on the mantel. I took it down along with the other mantel décor in order to decorate for fall. Of course fall merged into Halloween and then Thanksgiving. Then that was cleared for Christmas. Once Christmas was over I went looking for that picture again. I haven't found it yet. Its driving me nuts! A whole picture has disappeared in my house.

  24. I just did a post recently about updating a wall like you did. I had the same crazy amount of patching to do. It represented about 5 yrs. of changes. I'm not one to leave things alone for long! The new wall color looks great and I'm sure the new chandelier shades are going to be perfect!

  25. It is looking good Marty! So glad you are putting your old man blessings picture back up. He always been one of my favorites. Can not wait to see how everything pulls together. You always have such an eye for things. I am thinking of painting the light fixtures in our breakfast area as well.

  26. Hi Marty. Your changes are really coming together and look just beautiful. I love the freshness of it all. Not sure if you posted about this & I somehow missed it, but what color did you use on your ceiling? Looking forward to the continuing redo...I am sure it will be gorgeous and full of inspiration. 1. I used the same color. Reliable White by Sherwin Williams. It is such a nice white and such a soft white. Not one that jars you out of your chair.

  27. It looks great, Marty, and yes! I put things away or put them somewhere where I think it'll make more sense and it doesn't--I go back to the original place. OR...I get rid of things and can't remember that I did, so I go looking for them and drive myself crazy, so I have to assume I did give them away....No wonder I keep so much stuff! LOL Good for you for tackling such a big project! ~Zuni

  28. I didn't notice how different the color was until you put them side by side, and I love how fresh the new one looks! I made a door hanger for Valentine's Day last year, and I could not find it anywhere this year, so I know how you feel. :)
