Cleaning Tips & Rearranging The Kitchen

I love a clean and shiny kitchen.  I want everything to sparkle and shine and I have a few tips to show you so yours can shine too.  I clean the kitchen everyday, then once a week I clean all the appliances really well inside and out.  That keeps things up pretty well, but once a month I really do some deep cleaning and polishing.  That's how I get the sparkle.

A sink full of hot grease cutting soapy water, a big sponge and some soft clothes and I am ready to go.  I give all the cabinets a wash down top and bottom and dry them with a soft cloth to a nice sheen again.  It really only takes a few minutes and you would be surprised at how much grease is actually on the surface of them.

Then it is time to tackle the counters.  My back counters are leather texture laminate.  Now that is a bad choice for a builder to put in a kitchen.  It is not a smooth surface and really does hold in grease and dirt, so besides a daily scrubbing, once a month when I deep clean I get out a  Fine Scotch Brite pad, my sink full of hot grease cutting soapy water and I scrub.  Once it is all clean and dry I spray the surface with Pledge and shine to a soft sheen.  The pledge seals the formica (Formica recommends polishing formica with spray wax) and keeps grease and dirt from settling in the textured surface.

Once the counters are all clean it's fun to rearrange and create some new vignettes.

Last job is to polish the granite island.  I use a product that polishes and seals, so it does double duty.

All clean top to bottom, now I need to cook a great meal or maybe bake something fantastic.

Or maybe I'll just sit here on a bar stool and enjoy seeing it all clean.

  1. Such a pretty kitchen, Marty! I'm so neglectful of wiping down my cabinets, thanks for the encouragement!

  2. WOW- you clean a lot, dear lady! And here I thought I was a clean freak - not! : - )

I haven't used that granite cleaner/polish - I use two separate items, so may need to give that one a try soon!

Now it's funny but that last thing in the world I want to do on cleaning day is cook or bake, either.

I want to go OUT and keep the kitchen clean for two seconds! My husband has a very high metabolism and eats two dinners every night, so it never even stays clean and sparkly if we do go out, haha.

I think I need you to visit me and give me some much-needed cleaning tip, my friend. And if you are here we can go out TWICE that night, hee hee. Hugs.

  9. Beautiful kitchen!

I am looking for ideas for the space between my cabinet and cupboards. Ok, so laminate paint is out. I'd never hears of it before now anyway! Have you ever tiled? I may try...not sure...it is just ordinary paint right now.

Loving your blog, by the way!

    1. I tiled years ago, but it is not that hard to do. I just have paint, but I would like a pretty backspash, so maybe a future project.

Your kitchen looks so nice! Mine never seems to stay clean; I clean it and someone else in the family comes and get it dirty. I just want to give up some days. Then there's all the dust I can never seem to get rid of. Wah! Need to work on this more. Thanks for the inspiration!

  27. I always love to read your cleaning tips, Marty! I am not as diligent as you, but am always inspired to take as much care in my kitchen as you do when I read your posts about it. In fact, I think I will be giving my cabinets a good wipe down today!

Love your vignettes, too. I actually took inspiration from your ceramic block with the oils and used a marble cheese round that I had in a cabinet to put my oils on near the stove. I just kept the glass dome stored away.

  28. I LOVE your kitchen, always have, and I always study what you've done every time you feature it in a post. I appreciate the cleaning tips. I'm sure my cabinets need a good wash down, so I'm going to do that this week. What I do need help on, though, is just how to deal with a messy husband. Following him around all day, everyday, picking up after what he drops and spills, and then walks on, is getting to be tiresome.
