Neutral Family Room & A Little Reality

I am loving all the neutral I have going on right now.  As I said in my post about the Breakfast Area, it is nice to have calm and simple after Christmas.

Since the Family Room and Breakfast Area are all one space, of course I thought they had to coordinate.  I love the browns in my horse painting and I loved the rustic browns in the tablesetting of the breakfast table, so I continued it right on through the whole space.

A super simple coffee table.  I am craving no clutter right now.

See how well this ties in with the Breakfast Area.

To me this looks so inviting.

Ok, let's get really real.  When I am standing at the kitchen island, this is what I see.  I am staring over a bunch of really not so pretty plants, however these are some really special ones to my hubby, so they had to come in out of the cold and rain.  (He's a Master Gardener and has totally different taste in plants than I do)

To further keep it real.  Remember I said at Christmas that my sons and grandsons all brought 14 guitars over for a Jam session for our get together.  There are still 7 and an amp here they havn't picked up yet.

See, these are the plants we are keeping dry and warm.  Not very exciting to me, but so exciting to hubby since the big one is making seeds.

So we can have reality or - - -

Pretty.  Personality, I love the kooky reality that is my world.  I wouldn't change a thing.

Is your reality a little kooky too?

  1. I love your neutrals too Marty.
My favorite part of this post though is when you said,
"I love the kooky reality that is my world. I wouldn't change a thing."
I know exactly how you feel.
Thank you for keeping it real and making me feel right at home!

  2. I appreciate your reality. I remember spending hours decorating the living room with lovely appropriate artwork only to have hubby take it all down and hang up mismatched Air Force plaques. Ah well, they do live in the house too. :)

  3. Your room looks great- love the color palatte. Thank you for being real. Every time I take a picture and have to move something I don't want seen I wonder how many others do this! That must have been quite something having a large group playing their guitars there! I stopped having house plants years ago because I didn't like it when they start to look bad. I can understand your frustration but I guess in your case they won't have to stay indoors for very long (especially compared to where I live).

  4. I wish that I had your vision. My kitchen, dining area and family room are similar to yours, all connected. I need to THINK on how to co-ordinate the look between the spaces. I have NO idea what to put on my mantel and my coffee table is just BLAH.

You should run a contest or something and the winner can send you photos of their home for your direction and thoughts of what to do!

My main items are all great, it is accessorizing that I struggle with. I need to try to shop my home and rearrange. Thank you for getting me to think!!

  5. Marty, so glad I found your blog today through your comment on a blog I visited. I'm in the middle of refreshing some areas of my home, and I'm sure to find some great ideas here. Love your neutrals and uncluttered, yet warm and real, look!

  6. Love the neutrals and the textures in your room. My husband would have overwintering plants in the house too if we didn't have a greenhouse.

  7. I think we all have the "kooky reality" behind the photos we post! I have some Jasmine vines I brought in for the winter that are on my guest room floor - and some begonias in my lower level, dropping flower petals on the floor regularly. I'm often tempted to ditch them but they are so lovely in the summer and fall outside on the lower deck that I deal with the flower petal mess all winter!

  8. My house is full of plants right now, too. It is 27 degrees outside, which is pretty cold for Texas. I love it when our adult kids are home and the house is too messy for blog photos. Your rooms look beautiful as ever.

  12. I'm a big fan of creams and browns-I keep coming back to variations of these in my living spaces. Your home looks so cozy Marty.

  13. Love the neutral - and love the reality! We all have spaces like that in our homes. Not too many plants for me though...I don't exactly have a green thumb!

  15. My world isn't too kooky at the moment, but there have been times, indeed!

I think that is SO NEAT about all the guitars jammin- wow - what fun, that's not something you find out about very often, haha.

LOVE your horse theme - it's really nice, Marty! Hugs!

  17. You've coordinated your décor wonderfully with the horse painting. The neutral colour scheme is very pleasing especially at this time of year. Thanks for the dose of reality - makes your blog true to life which is terrific!

  18. Hi Marty, I love the way you have pulled all the colors out of that wonderful horse picture in your family room. So serene and pretty! I love your reality check too- mine includes dozens of chew toys all over the place, not to mention all the other clutter of every day life.

  19. I love this. Neutrals and a dose if reality are the perfect way to start a Monday. xx

  20. I so love your horse picture and sconces...so pretty Marty! I can so identify with the "winterizing" plant issue. I bring all the plants from the screened porch for the winter and usually am able to keep them in our exercise room; but it now also my hubbies office. So, they had to come upstairs in the guest room. I don't like them in here at all, but don't want to have to buy all new each year.
Hope you are having a great day and thanks so much for sharing at AMAZE ME MONDAY!
    Blessings,
    Cindy

  21. Kooky is wonderful! If things were "perfect", I'd think it was all a dream. I'll take kooky lived in! I do love your colors ... the browns are so warm and inviting.

    1. Lots of reality always going on here! I love the warm feeling your living space gives me. I was at my daughter's house on Saturday. They don't have a lot on the walls, but they have this giant horse painting high up in the very high dining area. I told her she was now in vogue.

  24. Marty, Reality is always better than picture perfect! I try to crop the reality from most of my photos, or moving things around before I take photos. My husband just bought another guitar, so right now we currently have two sitting in their guitar stands right in our living room. I'm hoping they aren't permanent in this room!

  25. I love that you showed us the perfection and then pulled back so we could see the reality. I have always admired your impeccable sense of style. And t his post just confirms it, guitars, plants and all.
