Master Bathroom Makeover - Ideas - Thinking Out Loud

Ever since I redid our closet and glammed it up I have been wanting to redo our master bathroom.  My delima is the bathroom vanity.  Now I could stain it darker like I did in the hall bathroom,  (that was a ton of work and not sure I am up to it) or I could paint it and not sure I want to do that either.  I do want to paint at least one wall black.  I am thinking the back wall of the vanity.

See how pretty this is painted black.

I like this black background with the natural wood cabinet.  Natural wood is the new trend - at least that is what the "experts" say.

Here's another one.  I think maybe this works because it has a lot of white too.

If you follow me you have seen our bathroom a dozen times.  Nothing bad and nothing wow either.  The walls are  currently painted a soft camel beige color.

The door you see on the left in the above picture opens to my fun closet that I madeover last year.  I have wanted to give the bathroom some glamour ever since, but havn't figured out what.

I am not sure I want to paint or restain the vanity, so I am toying with the idea of a facelift with some paint on the walls and accessories.  Painting the wall the vanity is on black and framing the mirror.  Then add a new rug in black - maybe oriental.

I would paint the other walls white. ( I would love to have a pattern on the walls, but they are so heavily textured that I found out first hand on the hall bathroom redo that a stencil does not work.)

Make a black and white valance for the window, lower the towel bar and update the accessories and maybe the lights. I already have the fabric and white paint, so this could be done for nearly nothing.

Do you think I can pull this off and not change the vanity?  Give me your thoughts and tell me WHAT COLOR BLACK YOU USE.

  1. I am also planning a black-painted wall in our powder room, Marty. But I'm sure you'll complete yours before I do since I've been thinking about it for months now, haha. Love the inspiration photos!

  2. I think the black wall would certainly give you a dramatic look. I say go for it...you can always paint it back if you don't like. what color would you paint the trim around the mirror?

  3. Unpainted natural wood and black walls are really in vogue right now. You mean there are different colors of black? I am not very paint savvy. I kind of just grab something and go with it! I think you can make the vanity work. Maybe alter it even. You have very stylish tastes and I know whatever you do will be beautiful.

  4. I LOVE the idea of a black wall behind the vanity. I personally think you could leave your vanity as is but maybe update the hardware to something more blingy to make it pop? I can't wait to see what you do with the space.

  6. I say paint the vanity, but if you paint the wall black it would resemble some of your inspiration photos

  7. You have such good ideas, Marty! It will look great.
My daughter painted her small guest bath all back and it is dramatic. I like it and I think black will look great in your bigger bathroom. Love your mirror framing idea. I wanted to do that in my bathroom but the light switch was in the way.
Can't wait to see the finished reveal.

  8. Two things to consider making the mirror wall your accent wall in black: your light fixture is dark and will disappear if you do - so you'd probably want to replace. (ugh) And the other thing you may not have thought of: it WILL affect your reflection in the mirror - you won't be as bright looking towards the black wall, even if most of the wall is mirrors, it will affect putting on make-up.

Is there another wall you can paint black with less maintenance and possibly regrets?

  9. Black wall "iron ore" vanity, keep as is, 2 gold mirrors 2 gold faucets as budget permits and new hardware in gold finish. Then do your thing with towels and lower the towel bar use a little brighter picture on the wall. I think it would look stunning. And just do a few things at a time. You are good at this. Thanks for reading.

    1. Love these ideas. I'll watch and copy after this is done. I like all of anonymous 1's ideas. I'd only add, could you replace your shower glass panel that is lined in chrome with one that is lined in black? Anonymous 2

  10. You always have great, well thought out ideas but I have to say I think your vanity is gorgeous right now! Then you can pocket the money to go full on with your other ideas.

  11. "Graphite" is the name of the color I would use. It's really a dark gray, almost black.....then the mirror and lights would need to be changed. Think twice or three times before getting a black rug!! It will show everything!!! I love an Oriental rug in the bath, you can get a second color from it....like rust or apricot.................you will make it spectacular!!!

  12. You always have such beautiful ideas, Marty. I am sure it will look beautiful as it all comes together. After all, is only paint, so if you don't like it, it is an easy fix. I had a friend she did something similar and the only thing she didn't like was the fact that her reflection in the mirror changed with the black wall behind the mirror, it was much darker and it became an issue for her to get ready for work every morning. Also, her bathroom only has a very small window, so not much of natural light coming in the bathroom. Maybe that was the issue. Can't wait to see what you do! Take care, Maria

  13. Hi Marty,
I think the color of your vanity will look really rich with the black wall especially with the lighter counter top.
I plan to be painting a wall black soon....anxious to see your paint/color selection.

  14. Wow! The black is so bold. It will really make a statement. I like it being offset with a lot of white.

  16. I think BLACK would be vavavoom Marty! Since your bathroom gets a lot of light! I agree with framing the mirror too and perhaps changing up the stain on your vanity! Can't wait to see you re-do this room!

  18. I had a very dark upper wall in my previous home which was super dramatic and I loved it! It was a tiny (REALLY tiny!) half bath with a window....so I just went for it! Dark, dark green from about 1/3 the way down from the top of the wall and also on the ceiling - I loved it! It was stunning and took the 'beige' builders grade half bath to a new level. Of course, that was 15 years ago when dark green was 'in' - black is very in now and I think it would look great against the ivory vanity top. Go for it! It's only paint!!

  19. One wall rubbed bronze vs black. Keep a light tan or cream to work better with the brown wood and floor tiles.

  20. Marty, I say go with the black wall accent! I had a client that wanted her foyer in black (and that was not chic at the time), but I did it and it was stunning with gold mirror, sconces, and accessories. She worked in the world of finance that was a blah environment, and she wanted drama! Still one of my favorite projects! Pam @ Everyday Living

  22. I am seeing more and more black walls lately...reminds me of when I painted my bedroom walls as a teenager navy blue....I think popping the rest of the bathroom with white would be great...have you considered painting your cabinetry?...would be a very glamorous look...and I love gold accents with the black and white...Marty, let me know if you are in need of hardware for your cabinets.

  23. I think your space is large enough to handle the black walls and I would paint the walls and see how the vanity looks. I agree with another reader that maybe you could switch out the hardware for a new look. Can't wait to see what you do with it!! Decorating is addictive, isn't it!!
