Living Room Rug Possibilities

I have been looking and looking for a rug for the living room and haven't found anything so far that I love.  When we first moved in I had my cowhide rug in here and I loved it.  Just enough unusual to give the room some character and to go with the tile floors.

However, I think the cowhide rug just makes the family room, so it is there to stay.  This is a small room and the rug is the perfect size.  Now I do need a glass coffee table, perhaps two new matching recliners and new blinds and drapes -  but all in due time.

ok, so much for all that.  Back to the situation at hand.  I do think the living room needs an area rug under the coffee table to sort of separate that space from the dining area since it is all one long room.

My furniture is cream, so nothing really white white works in here.  Off white or off white and beige are great.  As you can see the tile is really a medium dark beige and cream, so the rug I choose has to work with that.

Now that you understand all the colors and textures I'm working with, here are a couple of possibilities that I found on sale through eSaleRugs.

This is possibility #1 an all over floral pattern.   I looked at all kind of geometric ones, but since the tile is layed on the diagonal, I thought anything with scrolls or geometrices would be too much.  This all over floral pattern would be a contrast.

I like that they show you a real life picture, that helps to see the pattern and color.

and I always like to see the pile of a rug too.

Possibility #2 - leaf design This one looks really beige, but that might be what I need.  I do like the abstract leaf pattern.

This picture makes the beige look a little lighter, so not sure at all about the color whether it is dark or light.

Not much pile on this one.  Pretty flat weaved.

Possibility #3 - Abstract Design  I love the abstract design of this one.  How different and unusual.

I really think this has a ton of interest.

Hi-lo pile that is interesting and looks darker and lighter depending how the light hits it.  I think this one is my favorite so far.

Do you have a favorite?

  1. I love your living room! I think #1 would work great in here. The floral gives it a little drama and is very upscale looking. Would look wonderful with your mirror and furnishings.

  2. I don't think the cowhide was big enough for your living room anyway. It looks better when the furniture is at least partly on the carpet. Like Carol, I prefer the floral option, but I would go further and suggest something with a little color. Everything is very monochromatic right now, in shades of beige/cream/tan. Maybe a little blue worked into the pattern, to go with your pillows? Or a burgundy (I think that's the color of the wingback (leather?) chair)?
It's so fun to shop! Enjoy!

  8. I'm curious, did you ever try the sofa in front of the window with the chairs across from it with their backs to the dining room? I just thought it would help separate the two areas. It might not work, but curious if you had tried it.

  9. Just suggesting...something with a bit more color for the rug? They aren't cheap but if I'm off on something I order, I always have another place if I don't want to return it.

I think it would be great if you turned your mirror above the sofa vertical...then add some art to one side. It would be very interesting. You could tie frames in with the gold or just go with some black accents. Maybe relocate it? I'm always looking 'Up" as opposed to down. I like change but always try to utilize my favorite pieces in another spot. Do you have artwork you like? Search the internet and find your style. I love Art.com Hope I haven't been too forward. I always love your taste in decorating, Marty.

    1. I love the first option with the floral print. I agree with Jane about the mirror, I would either turn it the vertical way and put something alongside it like Jane suggested. In my opinion the huge mirror overpowers the space and makes the furniture look dwarf. Just a thought but of course it is your home.

  12. I like the first one best, and also think a creamy shag would be perfect there if neutral is how you want to go. Also, a creamy overdyed patterned rug would be fabulous as it would also have pattern but remain neutral. Now, you know me, and I think a patterned kilim or persian to tie all the colors together would be fab there, but I know I'm a little outside the norm on patterned rugs. I just used this rug on a clients space that was also more neutral, and it tied everything in beautifully. https://www.potterybarn.com/products/gianna-kilim-outdoor-rug/?cm_src=AutoRACRel

Whatever you choose will be perfect:-)

  13. I love the floral but in a large size to better define the living area and perhaps balance the mirror.

  14. All three rugs are pretty...but my fav is #2. It has more color. I love the style of #1...but, personally I think it needs more color. You have great taste Marty...so I'm sure you'll figure it all out. Good luck...and have fun with it! ;)

  19. I like all of the rugs you picked, but the 1st one is most gorgeous and most neutral, and I think you need a neutral rug that will blend in, rather than stand out because you change your decor so often, you add different colours and textures so the other 2 I think might be too dark and too much. The easiest would be a sizal rug or sth similar - a texture and warmth but not much colour and no direction in any particular style. The first one is stunning but also very classical, and a lot is happening with the floral design. I think the cowhide was a brilliant idea if only bigger.

  20. Some color in a rug would nice to break up all the beige. Cowhide rug is too small for the area and the trend is sooo overdone.
I agree that the mirror definitely overpowers the sofa. Need something on a smaller scale.
