Met. Monday- Refinished DR Table

This area has changed somewhat, however I wanted to show the table that you see so many tablescapes on. I bought this table from a Design Gallery when we lived in Los Angeles in 1970. It is an import from England and I absolutely love it. It is 54" round has 4 leaves that can comfortably seat 10 and 12 in a pinch. Well after 40 years of use, the top had a couple of white places that I couldn't get out and so I always kept it covered with a cloth.

The time finally came to take it outside and refinish it. Out came the sandpaper and away I went. It is solid oak and boy was it hard to sand the old finish off.

A new coat of stain and now just waiting for it to dry so I can do the final sanding and then several coats of Poly. I had to hang a drop cloth so the sun wouldn't shine on the table and cause it to bubble or dry too fast. It's not really this dark, but it is a pretty shade of med. dark oak. It matches the chairs perfectly, thank goodness.

Living with this mess for a week is long enough. However, there are now 6 coats of poly on the table and it just has to finish curing and I can finally put this room back together. See how well the table matches the chairs. I am so happy with the outcome.

I love being able to use the table without a cloth.  I also thought I would enjoy switching out the chairs for the ones in the dining room for a change.  Love swapping things from room to room.

  1. Marty, you have done what I need to do to my walnut dining table. After you sanded, did you apply any stain before polyurethaning?
    Congratulations on your finished project.

  2. Oh my gosh, I so want to do this to my table! I am so impressed that you are doing it yourself! You are an inspiration, maybe I can do it!! So happy I dropped in! Good job!

    From a newbie!

  3. Marty, I hate living with a mess like that while a project is going on, but it feels so good to freshen something up like that. Looks like you did a great job and your new spring centerpiece is awesome.

  4. Marty this looks really beautiful! I love how you changed it to Spring in an instant. ~Lovely!

Your wall plates are gorgeous! I've just discovered hanging them as well and I'm hooked.

  5. Your table is looking beautiful.
    Love your new arrangement, too...
    xo bj

  6. You did a great job on that table. I love how it has turned out. I have a round table that is solid as a rock but in dire need of refinishing. You have made refinishing look so easy so now I'm not as fearful of the messy process.

  7. Well done Marty! What a beautiful job, well worth all the hard work. I love the Spring look, so fresh.

  8. Beautiful job on your table. You did good on the centerpiece too. Can't wait to see it all finished and put together. :)

  9. oh Marty.. I know just how hard sanding solid oak is.. Mine's only 15 years old and I have it out in the building sanding a bit at a time. I'm using a palm sander and still, its slow going.
You did a fabulous job on yours and I applaud your hard work. It was certainly worth it to have your table look like brand new..
Love your new arrangement and now I know what to do with the soup tureen I found at gw the other day, but i do have a question. after I make my arrangement can i prop the top against it. I'd hate not to see the pretty top.. what do you think, would it be ok?
Thanks for always being such a great inspiration.

  10. Your table redo is wonderful, Marty. It turned out beautifully.

I like your spring arrangement. I'm working on something for the farmhouse table. If I finish, I'll post tomorrow for Tabletop Tuesday.

  50. Marty, thank you for visiting me this morning, and your wonderful and kind words. This is truly an indispicable act of cruelty, I guess I should count myself lucky they didn't do more, or haven't done more as of yet, but this was all the money they could get out of our account, because that is all we had. O'well I pray things will turn around for us this week.

    Have a wonderful week.

  54. Marty, your table looks beautiful! you did an excellent job on it. I have some furniture I need to this on (can you come for a visit?). Your spring centerpiece also looks so pretty. You are a master at floral arrangements. laurie

  55. Hi Marty,
Your table looks gorgeous! And you did that all by yourself, that gives me encouragement to try to refinish my table, too. It's all chipped up - shabby but not chic! I have an electric sander though, thank goodness. I think I would have given up sanding the oak. You must have strong arms! I love the look of your dining room - so cozy, can't wait to see it all put back together.
BTW- you CAN recover a lampshade, it is very easy! Just do one step at a time, and cut a pattern first for a tapered shade so the fabric fits right! Otherwise you'll have a bumpy mess.
    Thanks for visiting!
    Heidi - Heart and Home

  56. The table turned out beautifully. That is so much work! You also did a wonderful job with the centerpiece. You've really been busy.

  57. Marty, I have just begun my sanding...and the table is big and I am a bit discouraged. Now I think maybe I can do it. I will work on it again tomorrow. Thanks for the push! :)

  58. What a great job you did--the table is lovely!
