Best Fudge Cake Ever

I am a chocolate nut.  Anything chocolate is definitely my weakness, and fudge is such a sinful pleasure.  A great piece of cake, a glass of coke and a book.  Best way to take a little break ever.

Whenever my sweet tooth acts up, I always pull out this little recipe box my precious mom gave me.  It is filled with all of her wonderful recipes that she used constantly.  I also love to see her handwriting on all the cards.  I miss her so much, but such sweet memories.

The top of the box is just so cute with it's painted design.

This was my favorite cake and the one she always made for my birthday when I was a little girl.

Dark, moist and fudge goodness.  Soooooooooo yummy.

Chocolate Cake

2 c. flour
2 c. sugar
3/4 c. crisco
1 tsp. salt
2/3 c. cocoa
1 1/2 tsp. soda
3/4 c. milk
Combine all ingredients and beat for 2 minutes.

Add -

3/4 tsp. baking powder and stir in well, then add
1/2 c. milk
3 eggs - unbeaten
1 tsp. vanilla
Beat 2 more minutes.

Pour into greased and floured pans and bake at 350.

Makes 3 8" layers
large sheetcake or
4 doz. cupcakes.

Baking time depends on the pans you use.  If making the sheetcake, bake approx 30-33 min.

Test with a toothpick to check when done.  Do not over or under bake.

Don't you love the notes about baking time.  She was one of those cooks that rarely measured anything, it was usually a smidge of this and a dash of that.

Such a great cake, I hope you will try it.

I am joining Designs By Gollum for Foodie Friday.

Thanks for stopping by, I always look forward to your visits.

  2. Mmmm, I want a piece! Sounds sooo good!

  3. Marty, I know just what you mean about your mom's recipes. I absolutely love to pull out one of my mother's recipe cards and get to see a recipe she wrote in her own hand.

When I got married, my aunt gave me a recipe box very much like your mom's box (without the pretty painting, though). What I liked best was that she put several of her favorite recipes in it--all handwritten! I think perhaps handwritten recipes are my favorites.

That chocolate cake does look delicious! Thank you for sharing a prized recipe.

  4. This cake looks so good! Chocolate is my favorite!
Love the recipe box full of cherished recipes. I have a collection of my grandmothers and great aunt recipes. Any time my mother gives me one, I tell her to write it down for me, so I have it in her writing.
    Great memories!

  5. OH MY! that looks so sinfully good!
I love seeing your Mom's recipe box. I have my Mom and Grandmother's. Like you I like to read their handwriting and reminse about what the dish was like when they made it, what they served it on.

  19. That looks like one YUMMY looking cake. If you've got a glass of milk, I'd love to share a piece with you.

I'm glad you have the recipes and all the wonderful memories of cooking with your mother. My mom is still with me, but some of my fondest memories of my childhood are in our kitchen as she taught me how to cook.

  20. Hi Marty, This cake looks delicious and actually reminds me of the chocolate cake my hubby's Nana used to make all the time and he LOVED it! She raised him and this was one of the only things he thought she made well (she used to make him eat liver and other goodies like that) but this cake was good! I am going to try your recipe and see if he likes it as much. I think it looks delicious and is not a good thing for me to be looking at this morning!!! Too mouth watering! And don't you just love having your mom's handwriting with you as you bake? This is something I am worried about for our kids. As I put all my recipes on the computer they will not have these little mementos in the future. Marty, will you share the frosting recipe? Everything about this cake reminds me of Nana's cake, and I don't have her recipe! Am I rambling? See, just the thought of this luscious chocolate cake has me in a tizzy! Linda
