One of the quirks of our "Builder Basic" is how this house had some of the strangest ceiling fans in the strangest places. Case in point - - - Here is a picture showing how the living/dining area looked when we bought the house. You can see the hugger ceiling fan on the two story ceiling right where a dining chandelier should be.
A closer view now that we have moved in and with our dining table. Still so strange as to why anyone would take down the original light fixture (even if it was really ugly) and put up a ceiling fan on such a tall ceiling.
Not sure if I want to go really glitzy or keep it toned down. I really like both ideas. Here are the ones that have caught my eye so far. Size is also going to be an issue. I can't have something too small or it will be dwarfed, so I am looking at the size of all these carefully. The second most important issue is $$$$$. I don't think you have to spend a kings ransom to have a gorgeous light, so these are all very reasonable.
#1 - I love burnished gold and the fact that this one has a little bit of sparkly with the little crystal chain swags. This one measures 32" high x 32" wide. On sale at the moment for $153.00 I think that is a steal.
#2- This one has burnished silver and lots of crystals. (I would probably touch up the silver with just a little gold rub'n buff) It measures 30" high x 17" wide and sells for $228.00
#3- This one is soft burnished gold and is a take on the standard light we have all seen for years. It has been glitzed up a bit with some crystal swags. It measure 25" high and 25" wide. It is on sale for $$149.00
#4- This one really grabs your attention. I have seen this one in person and so much prettier than the pic. It measures 30" high x 24" wide and sells for $274.00.
#5- This one is all crystal and if you have seen one like it in person, they are absolutely stunning. This would definitely make a statement. It measures 26" high x 25.5" wide and sells for $159.00.
I think it is time for the ceiling fan to go and a pretty light fixture to replace it. Just not sure what direction to go. What do you think? Did you see a favorite?
If you like Thrifty & Chic on a Budget, I would love to have you follow me.

The last one would look best if you want it on a long chain so it hangs closer to the table. I'm partial to #2 and #4 as well, though I'm not sure how they would do on a super-long chain.
ReplyDeleteHave you looked on ebay/craigslist? We bought antique chandeliers, and even with the cost of rewiring they were less expensive and more beautiful (real crystal, not glass) than new.
The first one grabs me. Simple but very tasteful. Easier to clean when the times comes along.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely Number 4! It would be so beautiful with the rest of your lovely pieces. Love your blog, can't wait to see which one you choose!
ReplyDelete#1 or #3. I find the others too formal for the area. A classic chandelier is always a good choice, Marty!
ReplyDeletenone of them is wide enough, for comparison purposes the fan is probably 42 inches wide, the most common size, any fixture less wide than that will be lost in the room....
ReplyDeleteHi Marty. Such fun to dress the whole house. I love the first chandelier to go with the things you have already done for the house. I think all the prisms would be simply out of character with the furnishings and scale you need to use in this room. There is a lot of "Air" in this room, and a glass chandelier won't help to balance that out. I think of light fixtures as necessary but also as jewelry for the room, the last thing your put on. Good luck, Sandi
ReplyDeleteI loved the first one!
ReplyDeleteI agree, I like the first one, too!
ReplyDeleteLooking at your entire home's decor I think #1 is perfect in the color of the metal, the shape and especially the size. You are so right you need big and I think anything less than 30 in will look dwarfed in that area. I also like the way it ties in with the look and feel of the lighting you used in your family room and kitchen area. You could replace the chain easily with a chain of crystals if you want a little more sparkle. They sell those online. Lighting is so important and it really makes a huge difference in the look of a room. You are definitely on the right track with this choice. Have fun!! Love following along with you!!
ReplyDeleteMarty,I can see a leaf in your table making it oval, an upholstered linen wingback dining chair on each end,and #1 chandelier. A beautiful combination of informal elegance.
ReplyDeleteFir your decoration #1or # 3 is perfect with your decor good luck in your choice!

Oh Marty, you are speaking my language now. I've spent hours upon hours picking the lighting for our house and still have doubts. My favorite one of all was a definite in my mind but it's on backorder!! I vote for something with crystals for your dining area...they might sparkle with the window right there. I like all that you are looking at. Now tell me, where are you finding these with such good prices?
ReplyDeleteSome of these are from Build.com and some from Overstock. Hope you find what you are looking for.
DeleteMy preference is #1. With that one you get a bit of glitz, but you could also use the little light shades in different colors to change things up for the season/decor. I can't wait to see what you end up choosing and see how it looks in the room!
ReplyDeleteFor sure.....#1......very classy and understated, goes will with your décor....
ReplyDeleteBut number 1 is too small! :(
ReplyDeleteOops! Sorry, I read the wrong description!
ReplyDeleteYes, #1 is wide and tall enough. It will look great!
#1
ReplyDelete#1 Go for it! And hurry up...your faithful followers are dying to see it! :-)
ReplyDeleteThe most important issue is size. Also keep in mind the length the cord and chain will need to be which can of course be redone. I'm not so sure it wasn't the fan light from the beginning. As you have pointed out that climate demands ceiling fans and that is the high point to push air in the room. My opinion and I'm not living there is not the 'crystal' look or more gold. And if it takes a few months to find the right one that's OK.

All of the chandeliers you have chosen are pretty, I'm loving #3 and 4 I feel they would look great on a long chain hanging over your dining room table....good luck and happy shopping.....

I'm in love with #1...simple elegance. Curious yo see what you choose...have fun! ;)
ReplyDeleteI like #1 best since it has some "weight" to it. Have you given any thought to a very large drum? With the size of your room, it could really use the visual presence that a drum would give. And a softness also, if you choose a fabric drum. I think a drum is very transitional and would not fight with any of your other lights.
ReplyDeleteOf these, I like #1 the best. It matches the dressy casual style of the dining room furniture. And I love the turned shape of the "candles"!
ReplyDeleteI love #1 for the size and scale. My guess is that you will have to have it rewired to hang at a proper height off the table (30" from table top) so there would be extra expense. It is go graceful.
ReplyDeleteHi Marty.I noticed the simple gold one right away becuz it is similar to the one i chose for my own dining room. I think it was Lowes that had one pretty close to your choice on clearance for $24.75. Good luck. Blessings, Jenny
ReplyDeleteI don't really have a choice. I'm not a chandy type person. A bit formal for me. You don't think you'll need a fan in such a warm climate? I couldn't give mine up I don't think even in OK. Good luck in choosing!
ReplyDeleteBrenda
No. 1 is striking. It reminds me of anchors. I hope you have fun making your choice.
ReplyDeleteI am in favor of # 1. The chandeliers seem too formal for your other furnishings since it's one big room. What is the other lighting in that space that looks like a round pendent light ? Any cams ? How does it look at night with just that fan ?
ReplyDeleteWe are counting on you wowing us with your final choice.
Myrna
Oh Marty, they are all very pretty and would look good. Just remember you have to clean all those crystals, not a easy job. Mine really needs to be cleaned, but I cannot get on a ladder, soooooooooo I have to find someone to do it for me.
ReplyDeleteYour home is sure looking terrific, you have done a wonderful job.
Good luck, I am sure you will make the right choice.
Mary
I think you might be sorry this summer without that fan. it's there not only to circulate the air, but it keeps it from rising up to the second level, which helps keep your downstairs cooler and your electric bill down. Otherwise, all the cool air conditioned air will rise up the open stairway and your living rm dining rm combo will be stuffy and quite warm on those hot summer days without a fan. There's a good reason why it is there! Ask me how I know ;)
ReplyDeleteHi Marty! First, let me say that you always have a way of picking the perfect things for your house, so I know your final choice will look fabulous. I will cast my vote for bachelor #1!!! Looking forward to seeing your favorite. Jane
