The Mirror Is Gone - Now What

Well I have been discussing and deciding about this huge mirror ever since we moved into this house 1 1/2 yrs ago.  As you all know I even did a poll on whether it should stay or go.  It just didn't seem to fit this house and even though a lot of you thought it should be turned vertically and give it a try, I just finally thought it had to go.

So here is the last look at the mirror in this room.  Not sure what is going to be a filler for this space for now, so that has me a little stumped.

But here is how it is going to sing it's farewell song.

I have no idea what I am going to put on this big two story wall.  Maybe a gallery, or a larger painting or another mirror.  Not a clue.  I guess it will be blank for a while.

I really want to take this room into a more transitional style and not so much into the hard traditional.  I am still very much traditional at heart, but maybe take it into a little softer more classic look.  So a few end table changes might take place too along with a few accessory changes.  Time to update this room.

Stay tuned, I will show you how we are progressing as things move along.

  1. It is amusing how we all get a certain style all completed just to discover later on that we now want to do something different. I myself have had so many different styles in my living room that my family always says to each other, "I wonder what Pat is doing in her home now?" Ha ha!
I personally love your style, and I hope you do not get too far into the gray and white theme as I think soon it will go by the wayside.
I have always like your blog as it is not like so many others out there that are now into the farmhouse look with the gray and white everywhere. They all look alike and I finally unsubscribed to many blogs I had followed for a long time as I have no interest in that bland look. I like color and pattern.
But I do understand your wanting to change out the mirror, it is probably time for something new over the sofa wall, and I cannot wait to see what you decide on.

    1. Well I can't imagine I will ever be anything but Traditional. I love the farmhouse look in others homes and the white and gray is stunning, however I don't think it is me. I am just looking to create a classic updated Traditional Style. That is who I am - (well classic - - -not so updated. hahaha)

  2. Hard traditional styled rooms can sometimes have a very 'hands off', don't touch, unwelcome look. I think that a more transitional look would be nice since it lets people know that they are welcome to come and sit for a while. Gallery walls tend to bring out that feeling (imho) because they feel like they were created and added to over time instead of just bought and stuck up on a wall to fill a space. Perhaps a mix of frames and a few unexpected, old fun family pictures in the mix. I grew up in a home that always had a traditional living room, which is why no one spent any time in it. I hope you can Google a few ideas that help you with re-creating your wall. Have fun with it!

    1. It will be so fun to see what finally lands on this wall. A gallery would be such a fun project. I just need to get my head around things.

  3. Everyone has a it's own taste, let this be traditional or farm house; although I am more prone to liking what you do, it's more me, I feel very comfortable at my home, my family was here and recently had seven guests besides us and everyone felt right at home in my more traditional, non white decor, except for the walls, lol..
I love the idea of a gallery, I am forever thinking I want one too and now I have the space, but it's taking me "trips abroad" in between to finally start.
I know you will come up with the perfect thing dear Marty and I can't wait to see it so I can inspire myself.

    1. Thanks so much Fabby. I love the traditional style too and I can't imagine me ever going to white furniture or shabby chic. It is stunning for others, but not me. I will always be traditonal just a little more updated and classic. I really think a gallery wall is what I would like.

  4. You have such a flair for style Marty so whatever you do in this room it will be stunning. I love the amount of light you get in this room too. Have a great holiday.

  5. At a Istore recently I was admiring a set of three identical sized pictures hung in a horizontal row (all having the same frames and similar images) that went together. It was really attractive. I think these things tend to come together as we go around and look at items for inspiration. I often start out with one idea and as time goes by sometimes my first idea gets tossed and I change up. I know you’ll find something great. I like traditional but not too fussy. Transitional is perfect!

  7. You have such amazing classic style, Marty. That wall is huge, but don't feel like you have to fill up that space. I think the gallery idea is great, but you could start with one main piece of art with sconces on each side to help balance things out. Your furniture is beautiful, and you always have such fab pattern with pillows and rugs. Have fun trying something new. Did you try using the mirror propped up on the floor somewhere with maybe a potted palm tree in front? just a thought to be able to still use that gorgeous mirror.

    1. I am going to just leave it blank for a while. I really couldn’t lean it, it was 5 ½ ft. wide by 7 ½ ft. tall, so it was just way too big to lean anywhere. The 5 ½ wide made it look totally out of place to lean. Just way too big. 2nd problem is it was 1 inch thick beveled mirror with an 8 inch wood frame around it. It weighed 238 lbs. That is a lot to try to lean. Just a much bigger mirror than most people thought. Since it was on a two story wall it didn’t seem so big, but it really was massive and heavy.

  8. Say it isn't so. I love the giant mirror. Anxious to see what you decide. We are going to like it too. Don't over do it now that you are on the mend. Happy Labor Day everyone.

  9. Although that mirror is beautiful, I was one of the ones that thought it overwhelmed your furniture...way too big in my opinion. I love the idea of a gallery wall, but I know you will come up with the perfect idea. I would say not to be rushed; leaving it blank for awhile will free up your creative mind to lots of options!

    Warm hugs,
    Carol

  10. Clock gallery! I love your clock collection, I think you said before it was your mothers. Seeing them all together or part of a gallery wall would be awesome. Of course may just be me. I have a thing for clocks. I also have 5 generations of my families watches, I have a problem lol. Whatever you do will be great. Can't wait to see.

  13. I've been following the mirror saga for a while. I think another smaller mirror will suit that space and reflect the light. A gallery wall would be nice too. I can't wait for the next update.

  14. Not sorry to see that huge mirror go. While the wall itself was big enough for it, the mirror overwhelmed your sofa/furniture and made them look small. I believe a mirror should reflect something pretty or interesting and if it doesn't it just causes confusion. I'm sure with time, you'll find something you like. Also, a less traditional coffee table would update the room without your having to change all of your tables. You've done a great job so far with your room. Even though my own style is much more contemporary, I can still appreciate the more formal traditional style.

  15. I really like the mirror! Maybe painting it a different color would make it look less traditional? I am a mirror lover though! Thanks so much for sharing at Thursday Favorite Things!
