Sunday Favorite - Living Room Summer Look

Thanks to Chari @ Happy To Design for hosting this new event, Sunday Favorite. What a fun event, this gives us a chance to see some older posts that maybe we missed, or ones that we would love to see again. Be sure to stop by her blog to see a list of all the participants. You will find so many wonderful posts to enjoy.

My repost is a post I did earlier changing my winter look in my Living/Dining room to a summer look. I had fun making the changes, I hope you have fun seeing it again.

When we moved into our new home and I discovered that my carpet wasn't beige but cocoa, I couldn't use my favorite reds and golds. The red made the carpet look pink and the gold made the carpet look dirty. So I finally found some dark peach tones and pulled the room together with cocoa, chocolate and peach. Looked good to me and so there it stayed. I have never been one to change things very often. Just put it together and leave it alone. Then I started seeing all the beautiful rooms you gals change all the time and my dear friend Kathysue changes hers for the seasons, so one day I told her I thought it would be nice to have a cooler summer look since we live in the desert. Now this lady has more decorating talent that accidentally drips off her little finger than I have in my whole body. She immediately said "Oh, I think a cool blue/green, linen and white would look great". Perfect, so off to the fabric store I went.

These two pictures are the before with peach.

I found three great fabrics. One with tulips, a stripe and a plaid. The tulip linen was on sale for $3yd, the stripe is an outdoor fabric and the plaid is a tablecloth from Ross. I thought the colors worked great together, and inexpensive at the same time. Out came the sewing machine and off to work I went.

I had already been collecting white dishes and accessories from frequent shopping trips to the Goodwill, so I started pulling everything out and trying my hand at tabletop vignettes with all my thrifty finds.

The fairies I borrowed out of the yard and with a new coat of whitewash, they looked great. Isn't that little face just precious.

All of the accessories are my Goodwill treasures or things I already had.

I used my grandmother's platter as a tray for the tea set, and her little glass candleholders. These were always on her table.

I thought a luncheon size tablecloth looked more casual for summer. Notice how the blue/green pops out in the painting. Somehow I never noticed that before.

Even the books on the end table are from Goodwill.

I love the much cooler look of the room, it just seems so refreshing to walk through it. Now when the summer months hit those all too often 110 and 120 degrees, I can think of cool breezes and ocean waters. Well, I can dream anyway. Thank all of you ladies for always inspiring, and most of all thank you Kathysue, you're a special friend.

I appreciate you stopping by, I always look forward to your visits. Hugs, Marty

  1. Wow, what a fantastic transformation. I can't believe what a difference a little bit of fabric and a few accessories can make. By the way, I adore the painting on the wall behind your dining room table, and the mirror above your couch makes me weak in the knees! Lovely house!

  6. Hi Marty...

My friend I'm so pleased that you decided to participate in "Sunday Favorites"...thank you so much for the sweet "shout out" for this new Sunday meme!!!

Girl, you couldn't have picked a sweeter post to share with all of us once again!!! You know, I remember when you first posted this fabulous living room on RMS! Wow...for some reason that just seems like years ago...hehe!!! I love this room then and I love it now! But I'm just thrilled with this new Spring/Summer look!!! Of course, this pretty aqua has really become one of my most favorite colors lately! It's so sweet and soft...so light and airy...so fresh and serene!!! Well as you can see...I love the colors you chose! Hehe!

Ohhhh my goodness...it's really unbelievable...how just changing out a few accessories can make such a difference and give an entirely different look and feel to a room!!! Seriously, these small changes had such a drastic effect...the "before" and "after" photos of your living room should be published in a magazine!!!

One of the things that I just can't get over is the difference in the looks of that painting hanging over by your table! When you added the aqua accents, it changed that painting so much that it looks like an entirely different piece!!! That just amazes me!!! Wow...you have really inspired me to consider doing the same thing to my living room! The change would be so much fun...something different and fresh!!! Okay...my design wheels are a turnin' here, my friend! I need to talk to Kathysue and see what she would suggest to do with my living room! I'm sooooo glad that you chose to repost this one!!!

Thank you so much for your sweet compliments on my Tea Rose bedroom...I really do enjoy the cottagy feel in that room...and it's so different from the rest of my house!

Well Darlin'...thank you again for joining in with "Sunday Favorites"!!! Have a super Saturday and weekend, Sweetie!

  7. Hi My Friend! I am just loving this event! Your room was one of the first that I fell in love with on Micassa. It is classic in style and although I thought it could not be improved upon when it had the peach tones - I was wrong! It is like it is a whole new room that has taken on another life.

I am so glad I got another chance to see this beautiful room. This event is perfect for letting us re-visit some fave rooms just like yours.

Hope you're having a great weekend - you Puttzer you! ;-)

    Hugs, Barb

  14. I do love your living room, and I absolutely adore that fabric on your skirted table and on your d.r. table. All of the white accessories really help the brighter look (and of course, you're just tempting me to come to your GW with you)! That is so smart to whitewash your garden statute and bring it in the house. laurie

  26. Marty,
First of all, your home is just lovely. I can't believe the difference in the look with the cooler colors of the accessories you added. I love it that you used things you already had or from Goodwill. That is how I decorate too. I love it when decorating can be so beautiful but not cost much, if anything. Great, great job! Amy :)
