Bedroom Inspiration-I Need HELP

I am in the beginning stages of trying to come up with an idea for the guest bedroom.  I want to do the room in a sort of Ralph Lauren-Hunt theme.

I've had this painting for many years and absolutely love it.  I want to use it in the guest bedroom.

I also have an English Riding Hat and Black Riding Boots along with some other old work, mens club type of accessories.  I have an antique piece that I will set up as a Secretary Desk with a lot of books, world globe and travel related items.

This is a very small bedroom with a double bed that I will turn sideways and use lots of pillows to dress it up like a daybed.  The walls are a soft beige with a slight gold undertone.  I am looking at fabrics for a taylored coverlet and dustruffle as well as pillows.

This is a gorgeous Chocolate and cream houndstooth plaid.

 This is the matching houndstooth

And I love this paisley with the brown, black and red in it.

There is also the same houndstooth plaid in black and cream

Large matching houndstooth

 Great Black and cream paisley
With either of these color schemes I could use some more red accents.  Ok, so here's the question.  Which do you like or neither and what are your suggestions?  I know you are all fabulous decorators, so give me some input.  I'm all ears.

  1. I love that choco & cream houndstooth with the paisley. I've been stalking Ralph Lauren images on the internet for a couple of years - hopefully my house will all come together in that kind of style someday! Sally

  2. Marty, my love for decorating came out when I saw the print & hat! Love it. I would have to go with the cream & houndstooth & paisley, with the walls being the color you described. You've got to find some riding boots! I can't wait to see the pictures of the finished project.

  3. Girlfriend...you are SOOOOO talented I know anything you choose is going to look fabulous.

Mr. Ralph's things are fabulous and I'm 100% positive you will come up with just the right mix. You always do! I'm always in awe of your touch.

Love to you this winter's day. It's totally crummy looking here in Oklahoma! :(

  6. I'd go with the browns. It seems more Ralph-Lauren-y than the blacks. I can't wait to see what you come up with.

  7. Marty, what wonderful ideas you have here. I like the red and brown paisley for the coverlet and then use the plaid brown and cream houndstooth and the other houndstooth for mixing pillows and shams. You may want a solid bedskirt maybe in a dark chocolate. Love that print that is your inspiration.

  8. Oooh I can't wait to see this room. I love the brown houndstooth. And horses are so "in" right now starting to see them all over the place. Maybe you can find one to add to the room. Very cool room. I think you should find some mens wool suit coats to make some pillows, maybe upholster a bench or little chair. And for other items think of using mens ties and belts to give a real masculine feel. That sweet little planter you got at Goodwill could work in there I am thinking. Can't wait to see what you come up with!

  9. Yum, Marty! This will be a beautiful room!

I'd vote for the chocolate and cream and the paisley with red in it. But you can't go wrong either way--everything you've shown is gorgeous!

It'll be fun to see what you come up with. :)

  10. Marty,
Oh~h~h. . .you know how I love when you challenge me out of my comfort zone. "The Hunt" was a love of mine in our "early years". I couldn't afford it then (or now), but I have a few ideas.

As I looked through your fabric choices, I noticed that the painting has more browns and greens with reds and golds. Very little touches of black. I choose the more muted chocolate and cream houndstooth plaid and the paisley with brown, black and red! Gold undertones for the dust ruffle are good and remember. . .several shades of greens in the painting, as well. Keeping the "restful" factor in a guest bedroom.

    For some inspiration:
Delores @ Vignette design, Dec. 12 post shows a RL tartan plaid, paisley, and lepord print! It's amazing!
On her side bar is a post from Beaux Mondes Designs, Dec. 14. Over the top elegant tartan plaid "hunt" design. . .must see!. . .
    Then for some whimsical touches,
Debbie @ Confessions of a Plate Adddict has the cutest post "Gone A~Hunting" with dog statues in hunting costumes! Too cute!

I will anxiously be waiting to see what you choose. .. the progress. .. and the end result! Keep us posted!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  12. These are both beautiful combinations Marty. I LOVE houndstooth. I think with the painting and your wall color, the chocolate is a wonderful choice. And you know I love red accents! Can't wait to see the finished room. Hugs, Kat

  13. I don't qualify for the designer/decorator aspect, but I love the houndstooth, yum! I like both, but might lean towards the brown more. I love the black and think it's great, but really either would work tremendously!

  14. When I first saw your inspiration picture, Marty, I was thinking the browns and creams. Love the brown and cream houndstooth and the patterned fabric with the red in it. It also came to me while I was reading your post that a brown and cream toile {maybe a hunt scene print} in some pillows would work. A solid bed skirt in the brown or cream would help offset the patterns, as well as some solid colored pillows.

What fun and what a great inspiration piece to pull the room together! Have fun with it!

  18. Oh I am sure it is going to look great no matter which one you pick out. I have that same problem, I love everything and have trouble picking something out. Can't wait to see how your guestroom turns out.

  19. Oh Marty, what beautiful inspirational pieces you have to work with. I agree with everyone else, brown and cream houndstooth with the the paisley. I can't wait to see your guestroom!

  20. Oh you are hot and getting hotter! This is awesome! You are right on track with all of these choices Marty.
I am loving your inspiration print. I love the cream and black houndstooth, the red and brown paisley, it could manage another geometric print and work beautifully! One floral print being the paisley and then pair it with geometrics for the mix not to overwhelm,, I would find a classic Burberry tan, red, and black tartan! Wow! your getting me so excited, I love this look. Here is the Burberry look:
    http://thesilkscarves.com/archives/burberry-scarves
So you have three colors together, red, black, cream/to tan/to even chocolate brown.
Now to add a little punch it could, if you look at the print, have a solid red accent in a wool felt pillow, or to really add pop 1 or two apple green accessories, the color of the grass. I might try that out in a swatch and make sure it doesn't look too tween, but going off of the print in some way it could work, even in fresh flowers. This is going to be beautiful! You might also go to Tartan Scot's blog, he worked for R Lauren for, I think 18 years, he still has the most amazing classic looks, just gorgeous. You could find inspiration photos there.

Can't wait to see this. It will be beautiful!

  23. This will be fun to watch develop. This is totally out of my style so I'm not a good one to give advice, but I can't wait to see what the others suggest.

  24. Okay, here's my two cents worth. I'd go with the paisley for the spread, a suit-weight solid for a very taylored (pleated) skirt in brown or possibly the darkest of the reds (from the paisley), the choc. houndstooth for some accent pillows (maybe some bolsters). I'd use some of the solid from the skirt for pillows, too. Houndstooth makes beautiful piping that would look so great on solid pillows. Can you tell I use to be in this business? The painting is perfect, as well as the other accessories you talked about. I'm so excited for you to get started on this room. You see I have to live vicariously through the projects of others until I sell my house and get moved into a new blank canvas! Cheerio!

    Love the riding print!

  29. I adore the paisley fabric! Honestly though, I think any one of these choices will be beautiful with the print and other items you already have. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished room!

  30. Marty, I love the first paisley and the creamy houndstooth with it. I think that's a great look, and I like the creamy houndstooth plaid as well. Ralph Lauren's colors always seem a little muddy to me hence I don't think I would go with quite as bright a white. I feel the creamier of the two houndstooth patterns would work best for that look.

The hunt items sound good, too. I like that, and it has that old world, clubby (as in men's clubs) appeal. I don't know if you have Kohl's where you are, but a while back, they had a goodlooking Ralph Lauren sort of beigy cream colored sham that has a leather belt/buckle thing on it that I bought. He just always has those great details like that on his clothes and accessories. So you might want to think of something like that, too, that you could add to the mix. Their prices are good, too.

I think your plan sounds great, and I hope my two cents helps.

    XO,

    Sheila :-)

  32. I love both of the chocolate hounds tooth patterns. Plus I love paisley so I think the two together would look really nice. Especially with that painting. I like the idea of using red with the browns. Not seen as much as with the black so it would be a nice change.

  33. I love that paisley with the red. The large houndstooth not so much. Love the red, cream, brown color scheme. Girl, whatever you do will be beautiful.

I'm getting ready to post my little den soon. Wish I had a riding hat and boots! All of your choices are great. Can't wait to see the results!

  50. Your fabrics and color choices are very nice. As a frequest guest in the homes of a bed and breakfast club members, I just need one or two flat surfaces on which I can place my "stuff." Decorations are nice, but can be overdone in a guest room. Cheryl

  51. Ah, Marty, you're inspired by one of my favorite themes! As a horsewoman, this is familiar territory, so I've got a lot of hunt-themed accessories and I've done a number of rooms over the years with this type of equestrian theme.

My only concern about the use of houndstooth in your scheme is that it's a high contrast pattern (whether brown/beige or black/white), so it can be a very bold visual statement, so I'd suggest using it in moderation as an accent rather than in large expanses.

Your scheme definitely is leaning toward the beiges/browns/reds, so why not add a shot of bright yellow in there for punch? Foxhunters typically wear bright "canary" yellow vests (wasitcoat) under their riding jackets as part of their formal hunting attire, so it's a natural fit.

Also, to anchor your scheme, how about some navy blue or a nice, dark green (rather than black, which can be a bit intense)? The red/green combo is not only a holiday staple, but is a familiar equestrian motif (think Gucci, too).

With a few bits of vintage brass and/or pewter (think horse bits), I don't think you can go wrong! Good luck - can't wait to see a post on how well it turns out!

  52. Love all you do and these prints are wonderful. I'm in LOVE with the Chocolate houndstooth...I'm going to say NO on the LARGE HOUNDSTOOTH(It gives me a headache to look at it)... and Please don't forget the fox!!! And make sure he is ALIVE and WELL, hehe!!!
I'm looking forward to seeing your room... Hugs to you,

  53. Hi Marty...

Well, I am just doing a bit of catching up over here at your place, my friend! I missed this post. Ohhh my goodness...how exciting! A guest bedroom redo! I have always loved the "Hunt" theme and all of the rich fabric of Ralph Lauren...I think this is going to be fabulous, Girlfriend!!! I just love that painting and having some of your riding items such as the hat, etc. will be a fabulous addition to this kind of room decor!

I love both colors of the houndstooth! I was thinking that if you went with the black and cream...you really could add any color as an accent...that would be fun! But I must admit that I am leaning toward the brown and cream...and I love the red paisley! It has such a warm and rich feel to it! Bottom line dear friend, I know that whatever you decide...will be simply perfect! Marty, you have such a keen sense for interior design...like some of your other commentors...I think we should be asking you for your opinion! Go with your "gut" feeling, my friend and I know that you'll love it!!! Have lots of fun and I do hope that you'll include us in the process of your guest room redo...I can hardly wait!

    Love ya,
    Chari

  54. Hey Marty, I am playing catch up. I love the chocolate hounds tooth! It is beautiful. I am in the process of our master re-do and had every intention of using a hunt scene oil print for the focal point, but had no idea what to put with it. Since seeing your post, I am going to look for some hounds tooth if you don't mind me copying you?
