I Love A Clean Organized Pantry & Fridge

During the holidays I was determined to use up a lot of what was in the pantry so I could clean it out completely and start fresh.  I love knowing there is nothing out of date lurking in the back.  I try to start the new year with fresh food in the pantry and fridge/freezer.

You've all seen my kitchen about a million times.  I don't have a big pantry, just one of those that is like a closet.  It's the door next to the fridge.

Inside are just some standard shelves the builder put in.  Now I would love to totally revamp this, but for now it works.  I had used up enough that I could take everything out, wash the shelves and start fresh.  I went grocery shopping today and $200 later pantry and freezer are full and I have everything I need.

The top shelf holds cereals and breakfast bars up front with all the baking stuff in the back and on the right hand side.  I can just move the oatmeal and get to the flour, sugar, shortening and other baking ingredients.

The next shelf down holds all of my canned goods and extra dressing and condiments (mustard, ketschup & etc.)  I line everything up in rows and then I can see exactly what I need at a glance. I cook mostly fresh vegetables, so it doesn't take a lot of can goods.

The next shelf down holds crackers, cookies and all of my bulk rice, pasta and mixes, plus a few chips.

The bottom of the pantry is where you will find fresh bread, coffee, and the toaster and crock pot.  On the floor is a couple of bins that hold onions and garlic and the blue recycle basket actually holds my potatoes.  (I do have a larger recycle basket elsewhere)

While I was putting things away, I remembered that I had a wire door shelf unit in a previous home that held a ton of things, so I went on-line and found this fabulous unit at Target.  $34.95 and so worth it. Hubby was on his way out the door, so I asked him to pick one up.  You know all those things that were in the back of each shelf.  Now they are right up front and so easy to see and get to.  I should have remembered this years ago.  This unit actually adds at least as much storage as one more shelf, maybe more.

That's it, all nice and clean and organized.  Ready to cook up something good and I can definitely find it now.

I had the freezer all cleaned out too, so after shopping today, I organized the freezer.  This should be plenty of meat for the next month.

Top Shelf (yes I make extra ice) chopped green peppers (from our garden), cooked shrimp, packaged frozen potatoes, onionrings, sausage patties (great for quick sausage biscuits with gravy), and cheese.

Bottom shelf, on the left 5 lbs bacon in front, 6 pkg sausage behind, with 2 packages of pork chops on top(wrapped 2 to the pkg.) and one slice of ham.  Center has 8 packages of two chicken breasts each. ( I buy them fresh and the grocer wraps them for me.)  Right side back, 2 large roasts, in the front 3 package of rib eye steaks (2 to the pkg) and 11 one lb pkgs of ground round, (I buy it fresh ground from the meat dept. and they wrap it for me.)

I have a second refrigerator in the laundry room.  That's where I keep a lot of my extra fresh greens, fruit, juice, sodas and water.  In the freezer I always have a casserole ready to go into the oven,  frozen veggies, an extra loaf of bread,  some homemade banana or pumpkin bread and a few homemade cookies, plus a couple of flavors of ice cream.   This guarantees that I can pull together a meal in a hurry and have dessert too.

The $200 I spent today will last us all month, I will only have to fill in with milk, bread, lunch meat and fresh veggies and fruit. I like seafood fresh, so I will buy that when I plan to cook it.  That makes it pretty economical and I know it is all fresh and healthy.

How about you, how do you keep your pantry organized?

  1. Looks great Marty! We must be on the same page because just Thursday I completely emptied out my pantry, cleaned it from top to bottom and reorganized it! I feel SO much better now! Isn't it the best feeling to be organized? We also keep our small recycling bin in there like you do but have a larger one in the garage. Now you have me motivated to do the freezer too... Have a nice weekend!

  2. Oh Marty, how wonderful your pantry looks, you did a great job revamping it with the door 'wire shelf organizar!' They sure are the best! I too have a closet pantry type and if you are organized and neat, boy, you can put in there a mini market! I love yours! Enjoy your weekend.

  3. Marty,
Everything looks great. I love that wire shelf organizer too. It is so nice to not have to move things around and dig when you are looking for things while cooking. Have a great week end.

  4. Need to clean out my pantry again. I have quite a large pantry so it is a big project. Always check all the dates and can't believe how many are expired. From now on I plan not to stock pile so much. I have things in there I buy for some crazy reason and never use. From now on I will buy things as I need them. Stop pantry hoarding!!!!

    1. I cook with a lot of onions and find that they last about 2 weeks in the pantry stored like this. I always keep one chopped in a tupper ware in the fridge too, great to sprinkle on salads.

  10. Well I'm totally impressed!! Everything looks fabulous! Do you plan our your meals monthly? I'm thinking that's what I need to start doing (like when my kiddos still lived at home). I can easily plunk down $200 bucks at the grocery store and have to go back a week later! ~~Ang

    1. No, I don't plan my meals. I just cook whatever we are hungry for at the time. Also if I am going to have company, then I can pull several packages of meat out and cook for as many as I need to.

  11. Very neat and organized, Marty! You've certainly used the space in your pantry very well. I love the door organizer. We have a large pantry closet off the kitchen with sliding doors. I like to keep it organized and straighten it up each month as I buy whatever might be a good price at the time and we use up other stuff. I also try to rotate items so that the new stuff goes to the back and the older stuff gets used first.

  12. I'm impressed Marty, you have a mini market in there!!! Winter is the best time to get those chores done, did my freezer and fridge last week....I hate throwing out the outdated foods......such a waste......but did a better job of organizing this time. In my old house also had a closet pantry and had the over the door shelves too, that was such a great thing!!!

  16. Hi Marty! I miss my pantry so much. I had one at my last home..large enough to walk into and I loved it. All gone...all gone..
My life keeps changing. :) Everything looks so neat and organized. I had one of those that hung on the door and it was great. I have one now but only for spices, envelopes of different spices..even those little piggy back racks added space. Aren't they neat. ALL of my cupboards have the slide out drawers now..and I'm delighted with them. Perfectly beautiful pantry.
YOU HAVE A LAUNDRY ROOM??? *heavy sigh!*

  24. Love your pantry and freezer. My pantry looks good, but my new refrigerator has freezer draw on the bottom. Hate it. I loose stuff in there. We bought a separate freezer. When you finish all the organizing don't you just love to look at it? I always enjoy your kitchen Marty.

  27. Marty, don't you love it all so neat and readily available. We must think alike. I just put an extra rack on my pantry door just like yours but only half the length. I gives me so much more space!

  32. I recently did the very same thing Marty! I hung a similar shelf unit on the inside of the door and it is a life changing miracle! Such a great feeling to be clean and organized with fresh food. I purged my spices too! Now I am marking dates as I purchase things so I will dispose when out of date. Your place looks great, I know you're enjoying :)

  33. I love that idea of starting fresh every year! I have so many little containers of various grains and seeds and they probably should all be cleaned out at least yearly. You've given me something to work towards.

  34. Hello there!! I am so glad to stumble on your blog! I am linking up from Its Overflowing. Love the organized pantry. I'm with you--life is so much better ORGANIZED!!!

  35. Looks great, Marty! Your pantry is very similar to mine, and I have one of those door organizers, too. It truly is so much easier when the pantry and fridge/freezer are organized. Great job!

  36. I'm a huge fan of using the back of doors for shelving like this. Not only does it store a lot, but you can easily see what you have because it's shallow storage.

One thing I found helpful when dealing with deep shelves...I use 'trays' such as a cookie sheet to place items on and pull the sheet out when I need to access the items in the back.

  37. I would just love to start over in the pantry and freezer each year! Your pantry is so neat and tidy, too. Mine gets that way...and then my 8 year old boy goes in for a snack and my toddler decides to play hide out in there...and I'm sure you can guess the outcome. -Tabitha

  38. I too let it get down low at certain points. While it pays to stock up on sales, having too much results in needed to throw away out-dated food items, so I try to keep a balance. I do not have a large kitchen with much space for storage...my pantry cabinet is actually in the dining room by the kitchen entrance. ( galley kitchen ) In the basement I have a small bookcase that holds my canned tomatoes, preserves and such, and items such as Olive Oil, Pam Spray...things purchased on sale.

Freezer : just the fridge freezer...it would be nice to have another but I don't. I usually have it close to empty around Xmas so that I can fit cookies and Xmas foods in there and then build it back up in January

You are the organization queen, though...this post was awesome and fun to read! :)

  39. I love the door organizer! I have been wanting to get one for a while. I almost picked one up at Costco, but put it back because I didn't want to spend the money. Hehehe. I love your kitchen it's so pretty!

  40. I love organization. I actually did some early spring cleaning this weekend in my closet. I really like the idea of having things in categories. I do it in my cabinets but not my pantry...for some odd reason. The door unit is nice too. I could use one of those!
    Thanks

  41. Wow, I love the way you shop once a month for everyday stuff and seafood and other essentials as you need it. Very smart! I have actually been thinking of changing out my pantry doors (to ones that open; french doors) so I could have an identical wire organizer on the inside of the door...you may have just gave me the right push :-)

  42. Hi, Marty. Your pantry looks amazing! So neat and organized! Love the door organizer.

  43. Oh Marty, could I borrow you at my house for a few days? :-D This all looks great! Your pantry may seem small to you, but it's still bigger than mine. We had our kitchen remodeled last year, and they did add some much nicer shelves to our pantry. However, it's just a small space, and there's not a lot I can do about that. I would have liked pull-out shelves, but that wasn't in our budget. My pantry is organized a lot like yours. I keep cereal and oatmeal at the top, baking goods next, bread shelf below that, canned goods below that, and snack foods on the bottom shelf. My pantry is a cabinet style, rather than a closet style. I love your neat and tidy pantry and freezer.

Visiting from Met Monday -- have a great day!

  45. Oh I soooooooooooooooooo need to do this, Marty! Thing is we have a huge floor freezer AND a big extra fridge in the garage plus our extra large kitchen fridge. Ugh. I need to pay someone to organize all of that. Because ahdonwaaaaaannnnaaaaaa!

You have at least inspired me to know I need to do this soon. Take everything out of pantry and reorganize. It's been much too long. I hate doing stuff like that. I need a Downton Abbey staff, dang it! Hugs.
