Master Bedroom Drapes Are Done - Tutorial

This bedroom makeover is going slower than molasses.  I can't seem to find bedding that I like, but I am pressing on.  Hopefully I will find something soon.  In the meantime, I made the drapes.  Well, I sort of cheated, I bought a pair of the Lenda drapes from Ikea.  You can't beat them for the price.  They have a great linen texture and for $34 for a pair,  wow, material costs more than that.  I show you several different ideas for customizing drapes here.  I did a twist on the stripe edge.

I dressed them up with a more custom look by adding two black bands to the edge.
Black and White Stripe Drapes

That is a lot of bang for the buck.
Customizing Drapes Tutorial

I used 2 1/4 inch grosgrain ribbon for the wide stripe and 7/8 inch for the narrow stripe.  This was very inexpensive.  Walmart has a great selection.  The 2 1/4" came in a 9 ft. spool and was $2.97.  I needed 8 1/2 ft. for each drape, so I bought 2 spools.  The 7/8" came in an 18 ft. spool and was $1.97.  One did the trick.  So total cost was  $7.91.  How fabulous is that.

(Hint - If you are remaking some readymade drapes, buy the longest pair you can find.  I bought the 118" panels.  That let me turn the bottom up for a 4" hem and turn the top down for a double 4" header.  This gives them a really professional look.  Be sure to press them before you measure and cut, this way you will get nice straight hems.  No wrinkles, so they lay super flat and even.)

I think these will be perfect when I find some white bedding.
Adding Trim to Ready Made Drapes

Great custom look for just under $42.  Love it.  Now the debate is on whether to paint or not - what do you think?  The walls are currently a soft beige/camel color.

So, have you tried any of the Ikea drapes?

  10. Great job Marty! The black accent is classic. I like your tip about the extra long drapes and turning up the hem etc,. I have to have my fabrics in order to decide on a wall color so I can't say yay or nay on what you have now.

  13. They look great, Marty! I love the black stripes you added. They have such a classic look. I was inspired by your post the other day. I have been wanting to make some drop cloth drapes with a little flounce at the top for our master bedroom as my warm weather drapes. After seeing the one from At The Picket Fence that you showed in your post with the toile going down the edge, I have decided to do that. I should have enough toile that I used in the bedroom already so it will just be a matter of getting the drop cloth.

  19. Sharp drapes. Clever use of ribbon. I must remember. Never been to an Ikea, afraid to go as it will cost me too much. I like your paint color as similiar to my taste, but I still would make a change even if a shade or two darker. The drapes and white bedding will pop.

  30. Hi Again,
that is so funny, on your other post about the things you could do with the Ikea curtians, I chose the one with the black fabric going downward, and then looked at this post, not realizing it was yours and here they were. Love what you did with the double stripe. You are such a talented, creative, money wise, and clever.
