The Builder Basic Secret - My Dish Room

You know how it is when you move into a new place, you try to figure out what works and what doesn't.  Well cabinet space it at a premium in The Builder Basic, so I needed to find some place for my dish hoard.

There's this wonderful little space hidden within the stairs.  Most people see this and think coat closet.

Not me, I took one look at this and said this is my new dish closet.  Hubby had several of those metal shelves in the garage that he was working on, so I had him give me one big one and cut another one down to 3 ft. tall and now I have the most fabulous Dish Room.

Isn't this fabulous.  Now obviously I will rearrange it better at a later date, but so nice to have my things out of a box.    The plastic storage bin holds all of my napkins, napkin rings and a few candles.

I can hang throws on the rod and put trays on the top shelf.  On the right hand wall I plan to hang some towel bars and hang my table runners over them.  I love this little space.  It is definitely a wonderful treasure.

Who needs a coat closet - This is so much more functional don't you think?

  4. How convenient for you! However, if you lived in Wisconsin, you would need it for a coat closet. :)

  5. LOL, Lord we all need a hidey-nook for sure. I have a closet built over the basement stairs. It holds all this other things than dishes, centerpieces, chafing dishes, paper goods according to season, extra silverware, candles, candlesticks, those functional ice buckets, not the pretty ones, and all the electrical serving pieces for HUGE parties. Wonderfull, I'm sure you will make that little space work overtime, and congrats on getting into the new house. Sandi

  6. Marty, I have a coat closet under stairs that I've considered making into a better storage closet. Seems like wasted space the way it is now used. What are the dimensions of your closet? I think ours is smaller than this one, but I'm going to see what might work. Happy New Year in this beautiful new home!

    1. Mine is 3 ½ feet wide by 10 ½ feet deep. I have one 6’ x 4’ wide shelf unit and one 3’ x4’ wide unit in there. I love it. Amazing what all you can put in that space.

  15. That is a great idea! We have one too in our 1950's home we bought 3 yrs ago. The door is a bit smaller than normal. I painted the inside with blue skies, flowers and a huge tree with a faux fireplace at the very small end where the bottom of the stairs starts. It's the grandkids clubhouse! When the outgrow it, I may steal your idea

  20. Especially great in Arizona. We don't have a lot of coats that we need to hang up. And right now the one we have we are wearing. Excited to see what you do with your new builder basic.

  23. What a dream! My house is small with very little extra space and I'm always seeing something I'd like to have, but have had to learn to say no. Enjoy! Happy New Year!

  24. Clever use of the space! I converted a linen closet and half the guest closet into dish storage. So nice for you to have your storage so close to the kitchen. Dianne

  25. I love this! Our new house has very tall kitchen cabinets so my Christmas dish collection goes in the one above the frig. I have more storage in the basement. You're right, it's challenging to find a good home for your treasures in a new home. Your new house is beautiful!
