The Kitchen Remodel Begins - What Color For The Walls

I am so excited.  I knew when we bought this house that the kitchen would be one of my first projects.  It needs a little over-hauling, so the fun is about to begin.

We've been in the house for two weeks now and that has given me time to test out the layout and design of the kitchen cabinets and the work space flow.    (So far I think the biggest pluses of this kitchen are the large walk in pantry and my dish room.  If you missed it, you can see the dish room here.)   My contractor called and said he had some time open so I am jumping in with both feet on a makeover.

Adding some new cabinets and deleting others, plus lots of trim, paint and gorgeous new appliances is on my list.

Remember this picture before we moved in?

Same view now that we are in.  I want to make quite a few changes.

This is looking straight on into the kitchen and breakfast area.

New cabinets just arrived.  EEEEEEEEKKKKKK   this is really happening.  I can't wait.

The painter came and picked up the new cabinets and all the door and drawer fronts of the cabinets that will be staying so he could paint them in his shop.  He left me a sample of how the cabinets will look painted.  I propped the sample up on the microwave.  (It will be replaced with stainless convection/micro).

THE PLANS

New Cabinets - I am not redoing the whole kitchen, just taking out a few cabinets and adding others.
Cabinets will be re-arranged, tons of moldings added and  the island completely redone with new cabinets.

The cabinets will all be painted white with an antique glaze.

The counters will be replaced with either a white granite or quartz.  I haven't picked it out yet.  The peninsula breakfast bar side (on the family room side) will be changed to 12" deep so bar stools are comfortable.  The back splash will be tiled in a marble subway pattern.

New stainless under mount deep sink and faucet.

A new stainless slide in range, microwave and dishwasher to match my gorgeous new fridge.

The track lighting will be replaced with pot lights.  There will be two pendant lights over the peninsula and a new chandy for the breakfast area.
The brown blinds will be replaced with white ones.

The final pièce de résistance will be the new wood floors throughout the kitchen, pantry, laundry and adjoining family room.

This is a similar detail the top of my cabinets will have and I am debating whether to add bead board to the sides of the island.  (mine will not have an overhang for bar stools - bar stools will be used at the family room side of the peninsula)

I am thinking I like this detail much better for the island.

Or this one my friend did on her island.  21 Rosemary Lane.

This is the granite I am thinking about.  It is called White Marble.

QUESTION

The cabinets are being painted Swiss Coffee with a small glaze detail on the inside edge of the molding.  I've ordered antique gold pulls for the cabinets.   My walls are currently the same color.  Since this is a small kitchen area that adjoins the breakfast and family rooms, should I leave the walls Swiss Coffee or paint them a contrasting color.  I am leaning towards leaving it all white -  What do you think?  I need to paint right away if I am going to change things.

  1. Gosh Marty, I am so excited for you!! What a fun journey!! I love your countertop choice too. I want to do white marble looking quartz in my bathrooms, because it is zero maintenance and looks amazing, and I'd do it in the kitchen too if I could. Yours is going to be amazing!!

  2. I love your vision! So bright and modern. I went with soft white cabinets, a similar quartz countertop and simple white subway tile. The wall color I chose was SW Agreeable Gray and I love the subtle contrast of color. What is the wall color of the rest of the area? A new coat of paint will certainly freshen things up. Whatever you chose, your new kitchen will be stunning!!

  3. Oh! That is amazing, Marty. How very exciting and you will have a showcase kitchen when you are done. I had missed the dish closet before and that is a great idea. I don't think you need 'coat closets' where you are like we do here.
I would probably stick with one color for a seamless flow, Marty, but you have such a good eye that you could figure out a way to add a bit of color if you wanted to do that. Maybe even an accent wall with a slightly different color? Can't wait to see the whole room come together. Hugs- Diana

  6. Your ideas are wonderful, can't wait to see it! I recommend the quartz counters. When we remodeled the kitchen 10 years ago, I did all the research and decided that quartz, no cheaper than granite, had lots of advantages, such as requiring no maintenance whatsoever. I've never regretted it.

  10. Marty I am soooo excited for you, this will be a wonderful transformation and I know your family is like ours and everything centers around the kitchen. Just one little thing I wanted to pointed out with your cabinet color. Keep in mind the cool tones of your counters and marble black splash, by adding a glaze it will warm up the white and it might make it look out of place, you might be better served to not glaze them. Love the panels on the back of your bar area, that will make a huge difference in the finished look for you. As far as wall color goes white would look great but I know you like color and that might force you to keep adding warmth in your elements. I know your family room is right off the kitchen, will that be white as well? I say what ever the family room color is going to be I would do the kitchen walls the same. Whatever you choose I know you have been thinking long and hard about it and you are going to love it. So exciting!!!

  11. Hmmmmm, I think I would leave the wall color for now. So many choices to make, and all the decisions you have made sound wonderful. Changing the wall color later---isn't really that big of a deal, so I would wait, and let the room tell you what it wants to be after all the cabinetry and counters are in. Good luck, hope everything goes smoothly, Sandi

  12. If your instinct is to stay with white--go with it. You can always paint later if you change your mind.

  17. My first instinct is stay white. Can always paint later if you change your mind. This is just my opinion from looking at the photos, I think the island/cabinet looks a bit off. If it were me (and of course it isn't!), I'd remove that and go with a stand alone like a table or dresser or something. Please don't take that as criticism! I just think of everything in there, that stands out as being "different."

  21. Hi Marty! How fun to make all these changes. You have picked fabulous finishes and it will be fun watching the transformation. Can't offer any advice on paint, since I'm such a color girl. Although I will say, trust your heart - you have such a great eye in putting rooms together! Jane

  22. HAPPY NEW YEAR 2017! Really like your decor style. Feel Swiss coffee color kitchen should look great, and you can always add pops of color as accents. Looking forward to what you do with this room...

  23. I love white cabinetry these days but for me white on white is too stark for me. On the other hand since the walls are already white and you are considering using it go ahead and live with it for a while. I'd go with quartz countertops- they are so neat and clean looking, stronger and no maintenance. I like that cabinet trim for the island that you mentioned you like. It offers a nice custom look. With so many ideas and advice how will you decide!

  26. I am just finishing up our kitchen remodel so this will be fun for me to watch and see how your project pulls together. I like what you are suggesting so far and I agree, keep the walls light. It will flow nicely. Sometimes I think I want to over design. I wondered about painting our kitchen a different color from the eating area and family room as well. I ended up staying with a pale gray throughout with the white cabinetry and as I see it all coming together, I'm glad that I did. As for that dish closet, I am totally envious. :D I love dishes but I am maxed out on space. :D Enjoy the process. As you know, it will get crazy but it will be well worth it.

  27. Oh my gosh...this is going to look so great, Marty!!! I would leave the walls as is since I think you want light and bright but you could always change that down the road. That is good to know about a granite called White Marble. This will be fun to see the progress. Happy New Year.

  30. Beautiful ideas, Marty! So enjoying following the changes you're making to your new home. You will love your bright white kitchen! How did you convince your hubby to do white cabinets - didn't he really like your stained wood cabinets in your former home? A woman on a mission can be very persuasive! haha!

  31. Definitely stay with white! You can't go wrong with white, and I am so excited to see how this turns out. I love white kitchens, and I know you love gold as much as I do.

  32. Oh Marty, I'm so happy for you! You must be the busiest girl in town with so many things happening all at once. I love the direction you're going here in the kitchen. I will stick with white in the living room too.

  33. Marty...your vision is tremendous and as always so creative! I cannot WAIT to follow you with the process, I know your kitchen will be gorgeous. I've never had much luck with changing wall colors "on the fly". I agree with the others, if you're leaning toward leaving the color "as is", that's your intuition telling you not to paint, (not yet anyway).

  34. Marty, I love what you are going to do to the kitchen. I have a question on your friends kitchen island? What kind of counter tops does she have. Thanks Irene
