I Think You'll Be Surprised At The Rug I Chose

When I was looking for a rug I wanted something to simply ground the coffee table and add a little softness to the tile in the living area.  I didn't want an accent rug that would grab your attention or stand out.  Something non-descript, but with a little character.  That was not easy to find.  I love the look of all the sisal rugs and have had them before and they were perfect in those particular spaces, but I didn't think just a plain sisal was what this room needed.  I also didn't want this room to look more formal, so that cut out a lot of choices.  I thought about a white rug since the furniture is white, but that just seemed like way too much white.  Next, I do not want to totally separate this area from the dining area.  It is all one room and not a huge room, so I don't want to cut it in half and make it look even smaller.  I finally decided that something that was in a similar color to the tile floors, but with a little pattern was what I was looking for.

This is what I chose and I really, really like it.

I only had one of you vote for this rug, but I loved it's more contemporary feel and the pattern is fabulous.  It gives weight to the side by the chairs and then flows out to the dining area.  To me it looks great.

Now the next thing is you guys are all going to scream about the size.  Yes, I have already re-ordered the 6' x 9' and it will be perfect.  I will return this one when the new one gets here.

This adds just enough pattern to ground the seating area without making it a totally separate space from the dining area.  It after all is one room and I am not trying to separate the two.

Now to figure out the mirror situation.  - - -HUMMMMMMMMMM  (If you missed the discussion about the mirror you can read that here.  Lots of interesting ideas and input)

Be sure to get all your projects lined up for Inspire Me Tuesday.  Party goes live Monday afternoon at 3 PM CMT.  Can't wait to see you there.

  1. Love this rug! It almost mimics the dappled sunlight coming in through the window. I missed out on the rug selection...my oldest daughter was up from Texas for my 70th birthday and I'm catching up on blog posts. xoxo

  3. Marty, you are so right, bigger would be better....then the feet of the couch would be on the floor, not floating in the room. As I was looking at the mirror with the rug....had you considered painting the mirror lighter? I know it would be a big job being it so heavy....using an off white-taupe in a milk type paint might be pretty and lend a little informal look to your room. Btw....just thinking this out loud!!! Hope you don't mind my input. Karen

  4. I missed out on voting but that is AWESOME - I think you picked perfectly, Marty.

Sometimes simple lets the other things stand out - almost all my rugs are low key - not competing with my art and decor pieces.

    Well done. Gorgeous rug.

  5. Like the rug choice and glad you ordered a larger size. Now, about the mirror....I like the idea of the mirror on the opposite wall behind the table and tipped vertical. Not hanging but leaning behind the table.....make sense?? It is such a large piece and I think it is overwhelming over the sofa. You have many lovely pieces that can be grouped over the sofa.

    Love the chandy!!!!!!!!

  7. agree with Golden puppies as I think painting the frame may be your answer. If you can just use a ladder and paint it while it is on the wall that would be perfect. Put brown paper behind the frame and then tape off the mirror and go to town.

  8. I love it. Try putting a wreath on that mirror first and maybe a tall green plant in the corner. Moving that mirror is no easy task. Looking down at the room inside of at the lower level makes us more critical and the mirror look gigantic.

  9. I like it! I'm also looking for a rug to go with a white sofa we just ordered. Any suggestions for me, where to look/order? I missed the voting, is it on this blog?
    Thanks,

  12. Please leave your mirror exactly where it is, exactly as it is! Don't touch it! It is classic!
I do agree that a large live plant would look lovely absorbing all that gorgeous light!

  15. It's too bad the rug you have now won't work in the entry. That'd be a nice flow going through your home. But I do love the rug tho, its got some great texture without being too fancy.

The mirror....I am loving the blue in your pillows. Maybe paint it that color?

  16. I am looking at the two chairs and table in front of the window in your living room area. I wonder what it would look like to remove the white chair, put the leather wingback in that spot and center the table and lamp. The white chair is small and open and could work on the other side at right angles to the sofa. I love the rug and the mirror is perfect where it is. Just a thought but maybe worth a try. Have an awesome day.

    1. So funny to hear you say that. I did that the other day. I removed the aqua chair, put the white chair where the aqua one was and only left the leather chair in the window. I look amazing. I will show you later when I get the new rug and a couple other changes made. Great minds work alike. haha
