Impromptu Dinner Party-Revamp What You Have

My granddaughter is here visiting, and suddenly time schedules worked out where my daughter and grandson were able to come to dinner.  With an hours notice and more guests, I needed to move the gathering to the dining room for more seating.

This is what the dining table looked like with my burlap runner and fall decor.

While this is really lovely, there really isn't room for the tablesettings.

Off came the runner and I replaced it with a couple of basketweave placemats.  I also needed to lower the arrangement so everyone could visit.  The hurrican came off, and other things were moved around a little.

The urn stayed since it wasn't too tall.

The rooster stayed, however I removed the pedestal that it was sitting on.

I used leather placemats, checked napkins and my everyday flatware.  I am serving buffet style, so the table is not set with the dinner plates or the glasses.  Very casual for a family gathering.

Luckily, I had a big bowl of Macaroni Salad that I had just made, and more chicken that was already thawed in the refrigerator.  So our menu was:

Barbecue Chicken
Baked Beans
Macaroni Salad
Tossed Salad
Hot Rolls

Nothing fancy, but still a fun table for my family.

I am linking to Susan @ Between Naps On The Porch for Tablescape Thurs.

Thanks so much for stopping by.  I always enjoy your visits and hope you come back again soon.

  1. That meal sounds perfectly delectable! Have room for one more at the table? ;)

  2. Hi Marty! Oh, yum, dinner sounds delicious! :) You did great rearranging your table! It's so cozy and happy looking. I don't think I've ever seen leather place mats! They look fabulous with everything else.
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia :)

  3. I love those impromptu dinner parties! Sometimes they end up being more fun and relaxed than ones you plan and plan for. Especially when you get to enjoy it with family! :-) Thanks so much for sharing it with us today!

  4. Hi Marty,
I'v been visiting your blog almost daily, and I love the arrangements you present. I don't have a blog yet--guess I need to get on the band (blog) scene too. Where do you all find these wonderful urns and roosters; just too fabulous? I'll be checking in tomorrow. Peggy

  5. You girls are making want to try my hand to a burlap runner! I may need some pointers. I love the transformation right before my eyes.
    Thanks for sharing,

  6. Your centerpiece is very attractive. Love how it looks so casual but festive!!

  7. Looks wonderful to me. I will be right over. Just add one more place. lol

  8. Table looks great and the menu wonderful. My kind of home cooking!!

  9. Menu sounds wonderful!
I have the same problem of seeing my guests and have to lower the centerpieces sometimes.
I like your new look and the old one. You do a great job.

  10. Nothing fancy but yummy none the less, and that means I don't have to cook. Looks great Marty!!~

  11. I wish I had just a quarter, gosh maybe even just a tenth even - of your "stuff" cuz you ahve some of the nicest decorating items. And you always put them together so well!

How was your dinner and visit tho? I bet it was wonderful!

  12. Marty,
Isn't it wonderful having your family share your dining experience? I'm sure that table was full of deliciously prepared food and intimate conversation!
I love how the black placemats added a sense of depth to your tablescape. . .seemed to give it a dramatic elegance!
Thank you for another inspiring post. Not only about getting ready on short notice; but the reminder that family, truly, is the reason for our being!

  13. Now, you're Super Marty with a sprint through the dining room for a minute makeover. At least that's the way it reads from my side of the screen. LOL

I love what you did. It adapted the beautiful table perfectly for real folks to enjoy a meal.

I've never seen anything like those leather placemats. I like them!

    You inspire me yet again...

  14. Lovely blog. I have been following for a while. I have a dilemma today though. I have recently viewed a blog post, made a mental note to go back to it, then forgot which blog I was on. So, my question is have you recently posted a blog about a new rug in your kitchen? Thanks.

  15. Marty, you must have some Italian mama in you- there's always room for more family! Looks wonderful!
    xoxo Pattie

    Greetings, Johanna

  19. What a lovely setting. Your menu has my mouth watering it must be supper time. Hope it was a great get together.

  20. How fun to get a visit from family and have dinner with them. You certainly prepared a great meal. And what a pretty centerpiece, Marty!...Christine

  21. It looks great! Enjoy your company. Sometimes that is the best get togethers....unexpected:)

  22. Looks great Marty, I just know you had a great dinner and lovely time:@)

  23. What a pretty table and tasty menu. I know they felt welcome, I could pull up a chair and feel at home.

  24. I like the leather place mats too. And ohh dinner sounds divine!

  25. You whipped up a wonderful table spread Marty and the meal sounds so good my stomach started growling!!

I am having Sally from Salmagundi and her hubby Bob over Friday! It is a good excuse to finally get some fall decorating done so hopefully next week I will get to join your party!

This is probably a silly question and I am thinking it may be my computer but I came to try and get some ideas for my tabletops and I am not seeing any links- do they disappear after you start a new party the next week?

Think I have all my canning done finally! Go pick up some of the clothing racks this weekend. My sis will be going to Albuquerque this weekend so I will just meet up with her there which will save another 3-4 hours driving time each way!

    bee blessed

  26. What a beautiful table! And the menu sounds delish!! The gatherings that just come together without alot of planning, are usually the best!

I know your family loved it :)

  27. What a lucky family! Looks wonderful and sounds like so much fun!

  28. Your table setting looks great. Anything would taste good sitting at that table.

  29. I think it looks beautiful and the menu sounds wonderful. The nice thing is that your could "think on your feet" and that is an art! I think all this tablescaping makes that easier for us...we think in dishes!

  30. Perfect! I love your centerpieces and how you changed them up so quickly. Love all the items that you used. Please come link up to Centerpiece Wed on my blog today and share your creativity with us.

  31. Beautiful and delicious Marty!

  32. Love the table runner/centerpiece..So fall/harvesty. Thanks for sharing.

  33. It looks great both ways. I know how that is. My fall tablescape doesn't leave much room for eating. I get a little carried away. Your dinner sounds delicious for being impromptu.

  34. Good morning, Marty!

I travelled long way from Stockholm to the U.S. as I heard that you had serve a palatable dinner.

Hope you have a room for one §;-)

Happy TS dear M and enjoy the rest of the week & week-end.

  35. Hi Marty,
I just love that centerpiece and then how you added the placemats and created a warm, family feel!
I am loving this Grandma thing!

  36. Marty,

I love your changes. Dinner menu sounds scrumptious!!!

  38. H Marty, table looks wonderful, and URN is great its something very beautiful....
Please can I join you at dinner, it sounds perfect and yummy...

  39. Being able to adapt is the key to making guests feel comfortable and yet special. Your table was beautiful before the transition but equally as inviting when adapting to the need of people actually sitting at the table. Thanks so much for sharing, I love your rooster, I may have to look for one of my own.

  40. I enjoyed seeing the little changes you made that made a big difference. How wonderful to have an impromptu dinner like that! Lovely table.

  41. I admire your flexibility in accommodating extra guests (or family members!) at the last minute! Thanks for the "how-to"!

  42. What a wonderful table you've set for your family. Love your fall look with the rooster and pumpkins. Very welcoming.

  43. Isn't it wonderful how everyone was available for dinner? Delicious food on the menu plus family equals a lovely impromptu dinner party.

Gorgeous revamped tablescape ~ Pretty at first and pretty now.

    All the Best,
