Bag Gardening In The Desert

If you live in the desert in Arizona, New Mexico or even Southern California, then you know this is the most perfect time of year weather-wise.  We have days in the 70’s and nights in the 50’s.  How perfect could that be?  When most of you are plowing snow, we are outside.  Our summers are brutal, to say the least, so the next 6 months we get to just enjoy PERFECT.  We love a garden with fresh vegetables.  Getting one put together in our new home is just now beginning.  We had so much to do with remodeling and then a total backyard construction that a garden was put on the sidelines.  Now it is time and I am sharing how we are Bag Gardening In The Desert.

I’ve always shown you this side of the yard with the pool – – –

Let’s back up and see where we started.  This is what the yard looked like when we bought the house 2 1/2 yrs. ago.  Nothing but wall to wall gravel.

While the pool was being constructed, it got really bad.

Then I cleaned up the patio area – – Patio Makeover

Hubby has a gazillion potted plants that he LOVES.  Me not so much, but I love him, so we manage.  We raked out this side of the yard and smoothed out the gravel, planted a tree and built a small raised garden bed.  We checked prices to fill the bed with really good topsoil and it came to $300.  Not in my budget at the moment, so hubby came up with the idea of doing bag gardening.

Bag Gardening In The Desert is where you buy really great soil in a bag and then plant right in the bag.  When this crop is done, we will empty the bags, spread the soil around and repeat.  We will eventually have the area full and at a really reasonable price.  $10 a bag at a time.  I can live with that.

At the moment he planted 4 different kinds of lettuce and a tomato.  Fresh lettuce from the garden makes the most wonderful salads.  I love them.

We can plant more veggies later, but this is a great way to garden if you don’t have a designated area and tons of really great soil.

At least this side of the yard looks much better so far and I have 4 kinds of lettuce for great salads.

Try Bag Gardening in your area, you will love having some really great veggies to enjoy.

Well that’s a different approach to gardening! Makes sense to slowly add in the soil and I never would have thought to plant the bag. Pretty smart!

That’s interesting. Sure makes me appreciate the rich river soil I had in my garden. Having said that, I can sure appreciate your thriftiness, resourcefulness, and next six weather months!

Thank you for the desert gardening tips. Unlike most other folks, right now my soon to be beautiful lawn will be grown in. I ovrseeded with ryegrass and it is sprouting up. I live in Palm Springs and the next six months I will be gorgeous! You are the only site I have found with a similar climate and growing season, and I always look forward to your postings!

I like that idea. I am going to try it this fall since I live in Florida and it is too hot in the summer for lettuce to grow.
    Hugs,
