Christmas Stair Garland – Step by Step Tutorial

Christmas Stair Garland – Step by Step Tutorial.  Welcome to the November Pinterest Challenge.  This month we are focusing on Garlands, so I thought it would be a great time to share my Christmas Stair Garland – Step by Step Tutorial.

If you are coming over from The Ponds Farmhouse, I loved her banister garland and I am sure you did too.

When we moved into our home 4 1/2 years ago, I was thrilled that we had stairs for the first time in over 20 years, so I couldn’t wait to hang a garland and decorate.  This home doesn’t have a banister and railings, so we needed to be a little creative.   I thought I would give you a Christmas Stair Garland – Step by Step Tutorial of how we put ours up in case you are adding garland to a flat wall area too.

We started by twisting two inexpensive strings of garland together and attached them to the stairs with some pipe cleaners tied onto hooks.  We just did a soft drape and then I played with shaping each little branch.   I had 27′ of garland to fluff, (that took a while).

We doubled up a string of lights, and hubby wove them in and around each garland.

Ok, on to the rest of the garland.  This all looks so uniform that I think it needs a few springs of greenery every now and then to make it appear more natural.  I found a spray of greenery and cut it all apart, so I can add a little here and there.

Adding the green sprigs, berries and a few other picks gave it some dimension and made it look more free form and natural.

Doesn’t it look better with the green sprigs and all the picks, it upped the game a ton?  I just used an assortment of picks, so use whatever you have or like.  I found a ton of things at the $ store.

With a few silver and gold balls of all kinds and it looks fabulous.  I attached them with twist ties to the stems of the garland.  Everything I read said knowing when to stop is key, so I am stopping.  (Secret – I used those plastic ball ornaments that you find at the $ store.  They won’t break so easily and they can be attached with twist ties so easily.  My second secret is we don’t take the decor off the garland, we just carefully place it in plastic tubs.  It comes out pretty good with just a few adjustments and refreshing.)

It adds so much to the stair wall.  I love it and add a few different balls and pics every year.  The view from the front door when you first walk in is so fabulous.  It definitely says Christmas.  This was the look for my 2019 Christmas Home Tour.

This was my 2020 Christmas Home Tour.

You are right Marty, it looks fabulous! I love the mix of gold and green and it couldn’t be any more perfect for your home. I have a quick question – When you said you put it up with hooks and pipe cleaners, what sort of hooks was it? The little gold cup hangers or command hooks? I’d like to try this but wanted to get a vision for what I needed first. Thanks for joining in. Your home looks amazing! pinned

Actually, the hooks I was referring to didn’t really hold up, so I wound up using some small nails. My garland is quite heavy with all the added ornaments and fluff. I drove small nails into the wood right under the top wood casing, so they held really well and held all of the weight. If your garland is not so heavy then command hooks would probably work really well. When I take it down I just add a small dot of spackle to cover up the small hole in the wall.

I’m in love this view of your stairs Marty. Your garland displayed on the wall leading up to the loft is just gorgeous and add so much pizzazz to the whole room! Pinning!

Marty, I love that you keep your garland all together each year! We have one super large tub on rollers that I keep the two garlands we used at our Murrieta, California home along the banisters. Here in Texas, I brought them out and refashioned them to go up and over a very tall arch around our front door the past two Christmases.

Really lovely look! Enjoy your beautiful home’s Christmas decor,
    Hugs,
    Barb 🙂

Your garland is very striking in your beautiful Christmas home, Marty. I never would have thought to imitate a railing by doing it on a flat wall; great idea!

Marty, you do have a massive area to fill and the garland is a great solution. Adding the extra greenery and ornaments gives it more interest and “reality”. Combining two strands of garland definitely gives it a fuller, richer look. Very impressive.
